Default Running lean ??

65' vert 327/365, fresh motor, trans, distributor, Holley carb....seems to be running a bit lean- QUESTION: When trying to adjust the "lean-ness" (couldn't think of another term at the moment), which way do I turn the large brass screws on either side of the front bowl of the carb? clockwise or counter clockwise?? Thanks for any replies....

Kurt, You would turn them clockwise. But, someone may have changed the jets inside the carb. Bill.

Counter clockwise to make it richer. Clockwise to lean it out.

Kurt, I reread your post, my error, CCW to add more fuel/air mixture. Sorry, Bill. But the thought re: jet change still applies.

This is only going to adjust the static idle mixture - is that all your interested in doing?

The "large" screws are the bowl plugs. The "small" screws are the idle jets.

What are you trying to fix?

Recently had distributor/timing dialed in...carb is completely rebuilt and set for the rebuilt motor. When I started the car cold the other day and tried to drive it onto ramps (not warmed up yet) it backfired 2 times thru the carb. Thought that might be a sign of running a little lean........

I wouldn't try to adjust anything on a cold engine. Choke working?

Make sure you stick a new power valve in it since you backfired a couple of times.

One other thought is that the accelerator pump discharge may not be set correctly. The engine will lean out when you step on the accelerator and will backfire until it catches up when the added fuel gets to the cylinders.

Just a thought.

Is there a way to check the power valve? If one was bad, would the car still run fine but idle rich?

If the power valve is bad, the carb will be dumping fuel, smoking(exhaust), and won't idle .....

The mixture screws only affect the mixture while the carb is in the idle curcuit ( car idling )........

The plugs should be a light brown when you have your tune up right...[ plugs will be a white color indicating a lean condition].....
