65' vert 327/365, fresh motor, trans, distributor, Holley carb....seems to be running a bit lean- QUESTION: When trying to adjust the "lean-ness" (couldn't think of another term at the moment), which way do I turn the large brass screws on either side of the front bowl of the carb? clockwise or counter clockwise?? Thanks for any replies....

This is only going to adjust the static idle mixture - is that all your interested in doing?
Recently had distributor/timing dialed in...carb is completely rebuilt and set for the rebuilt motor. When I started the car cold the other day and tried to drive it onto ramps (not warmed up yet) it backfired 2 times thru the carb. Thought that might be a sign of running a little lean........

Make sure you stick a new power valve in it since you backfired a couple of times.
One other thought is that the accelerator pump discharge may not be set correctly. The engine will lean out when you step on the accelerator and will backfire until it catches up when the added fuel gets to the cylinders.
