On January 9, House Bill No. 280 bill was introduced in the Virginia General Assembly . This Bill would change the number of license plates for VA residents, from 2 to 1, for passenger cars. If passed, it will become effective 7/1/2002. You may want to contact your representative to support this bill, since we all know our corvettes look better without the front tag!!

Wouldn't law enforcement be against a this bill? And besides a tiny minority of car nuts like us, who would be in favor of a bill like this? Are you sure this isn't a bill that applies only to old cars?

I remember reading an article once that said front license plates add little value to law enforcement. Almost all license plate "reads" are done on the rear plate. This is because a front "read" is impossible in most situations since the car is either moving (and the officer is trying to get out of its way or the car is passing) or its at night and the plate is not lighted anyway. In most situations the police are in pursuit and looking at the back of a car.

I don't know what law enforcement's position is on the matter but I would think if it were a big issue and it added to the ability for the police to do their job then all states would have front and rear plates.
