I'm trying to fit the rear vertical bumbers on my "56 and the "body to bumper" clearances are not consistent from the bottom to the top of the bumpers. The clearance varies form zero to 1/4 inche. Does anyone have any specs on what this clearance should be from the bottom of the bumpers to the upper part where the exhaust pipes go through. At some places, the bumpers are touching the body and I can't this being right!! Any info would be appreciated..

Actually, your numbers sound pretty good! I've never seen 56-7 rear vertical bumpers that fit particularly well on an original body...mine included! I'm the second owner and to my knowledge there's never been any damage to the rear of my car. The bumpers fit typically poor, but my passenger door fits worse! (It does however close properly so I ain't fixin' sumthin that ain't broke :lol: )

I can't speak for 56 and 57, but I can tell you that 53-55's have a similar arrangement, and they all fit lousy....from the factory. Your's sound pretty good. Chuck

Not to worry - that's as good as it got; my upper pieces fit pretty well, but there are the same kind of gaps on the lowers as you describe. That's the way it was in those days...

but, to stay on topic, when I bought my 56 about 8 years ago, it had NO vertical rear bumpers or exaust outlets... the entire rear humps were smoothed and painted to match the car , just like they never even existed....
someday when I find a nice set of rear chrome's, i'll put them back on..or not :lol:
