I located a number on the engine today. It is 102IIHCR. Can anyone tell me what this means? The car is a 64 Vette. I have always thought it is a 327 due to the fact that it has a upgraded oil filter from the canister to a spin on.
Thanks for your help.
Keith
UPDATE:
You were right John the # on the front of the Block is T0211HCR
The other numbers are as follows:
Drivers Side
GM 3858180, and above that is \ A276 or \ A278 I can't make out if the last number is an 8 or 6, and just above this number is a circle of 12 dots with an arrow in the center pointing to the number 8 dot.
Passengers side
T4
CONVT
These are all the numbers I can find. Let me know what you find.
Thanks so much,
Keith
3-digit engine code suffixes didn't start until 1970, but none of my references show an "HCR" code; what's the casting number (behind driver's side head) and casting date code (behind pass. side head)? Also, the first character for the engine code on the stamp pad should be either a "T" or a "V", not a "1". There should also be a 9-digit VIN derivative on the stamp pad, in slightly smaller characters than the engine plant stamping.
Thanks John,
Looks like I need to look for some more numbers. This one was located on the passengers side of the block just beside the water pump. When I bought the car it had a fresh engine and everything was painted. I was checking the fluids today and noticed this number just under the paint. I may need to remove the paint to make sure that I have all the numbers. I would like to know what kind of engine this thing has for repairs and such. Again thanks for your quick reply.
Keith
Thanks Clem,
I sure am glad to find out it is at least an engine that was made during the time my car was. Now if it is the one that goes with the car and not a 65 GMC pick-up that will be great. Thanks for the reply.
Keith
As Clem indicated, that block was used for '65-'67 327's, in all passenger cars and trucks; it was cast on January 27, 1966 at Tonawanda and machined/assembled on February 11th. From the 3-digit code suffix with no VIN derivative adjacent to it, it could either be a service replacement block of some sort or could have been decked during rebuild and re-stamped. What are the head casting numbers and date codes?
