I'm looking to replace my #3840383 bellhousing on my 64" coupe 4sp 365HP. I read in one of the posting that the casting date would appear as circle with dots in the lower half for week and a number in the upper half for the month. In the following ebay listing their is a bellhousing for sale that also has a number 7 above the part#. Can you number guy please help me with the date code on this bellhosing. Thanks.
It appears the E-bay bellhousing you are looking at is the same as what you say you have now. The correct part number should be 3858403. The picture shows a number (3840383) that is the same as yours. His ad lists a correct number in the text, but the photo does not back it up. The production dates on these should be a circle with a number (month) on top of 1-4 dots to denote the week of production. I would pass on this one, not correct. Pilot Dan
My 64 coupe was built May 6th and it has the later version of the bellhousing #3840383 as pictured in the email listing. This part number is correct for the later 64's, according to Nolan Adam's book. I think my bellhousing may be developing a crack, I'm looking to replace it. I was only questioning the date coding. Also what does the number 7 above the part # mean or stand for? Thanks.
Dave, according to the NCRS judging manual they list 3858403 as correct for 1964 models. Also, I do not see your part # listed as a Corvette part in my Corvette numbers book either. I did see a reference to your number in Noland's book in the supplemental list of bellhousings for only ONE very late (vin 22152) car, but none in his 65 survey either. I remain unconvinced. My 64 is a June car and it has the 3858403 bellhousing. Let's hear what some of the other forum guys have to say about this. Can't make out the number in the circle in your picture, but if it is a 7 that would be July and too late for you. Pilot Dan

From a quick search, it looks like the 3840383 bell housing is a passenger car (non Corvette) bell housing for around the same time period although you can't assume that none of them made it to Corvettes. The 403 parts are not hard to find. I bought one earlier in the year for about $60 shipped from a seller on eBay. I didn't care about casting dates, however.

hi, go to the source--every bellhousing ever made is here--BELLHOUSINGS tracy performance driveline. they have the elusive 621-11inch bellhousing and the 403 10,4 bellhousing.
Dave, according to the NCRS judging manual they list 3858403 as correct for 1964 models.
This was (finally) corrected in the latest 5th Edition of the '63-'64 JG; the 3840383 is commonly found in '64-E66 Corvettes, interchangeably with the 3858403.
