Hi, why do I have spark with the ignition switch off? I have a Mallory dual point dist. I have the 2 pink and black wires connected to the + side of the coil and the - connected to the dist. Could I have wires wrong on the starter? Thanks in advance

Yes, you could have the B/P wire on the wrong starter soleniod terminal. It should be on the "R" terminal. Which terminal do you have it connected to presently?
The starter energizes the coil at at full battery voltage , not the reduced voltage through the ballast resistor. This is to give you extra spark for starting. After you disengage the starter the engine won't run because it is not getting the reduced voltage through the ballast resistor since your ignition is off.
