I'm thinking of purchasing a ZZ4 and a Tremec TKO ???.
Does anyone sell a set of headers that would be similiar to the ram horm exhaust manifold that are on my engine now. I was hoping that I wouldn't have to change my existing under car 2 1/2" exhaust if I didn't have to.
Also with a ZZ4 (355HP / 405 ftlbs of torque) and a 3:55 rear end I was trying to decide which TKO to purchase. Does anybody have this setup. Most of my driving is in the 40MPH range but I would like to cruise the highway at 70 comfortably also.
I think your rams horns should bolt up OK to the ZZ4 heads if you want to use those. There is apparently a port mismatch because of the ZZ4's larger D-shaped ports, but several members have reported that you can take a die grinder to the manifolds and match them reasonably well.
I installed a ZZ4 in my '65 coupe a few years ago. The stock ramshorns bolted up to the aluminum heads and to my original sidepipes. Being a 350 hp car, it had 2 1/2" exhaust on it.
If you want a header, I understand that McJacks has a tubular exhaust that is a direct replacement for the ramshorns. I have not tried them, just heard that they work.
I installed ZZ4 - TKO500 last winter and couldn't be happier I'm running 3:08 gears so the VERY low 1st gear that the TKO500 has is ideal. I use the ram horn exhaust just die ground them a little. They bolt right up but I used some copper gaskets.
If you want to keep your original manifolds for a future restoration (avoid grinding on the originals) Brzezinski has CNC ported ramshorn manifolds that offer a port entry larger than the ZZ4 port.
These are the china castings, with the 2.5 inch outlets. Most left & right bracket versions are available. The CNC porting opens the inlets to a 1404 gasket (larger than the ZZ4 head, and good for a flow reversion step).
The owner, Randy, will remove the heat riser tube and plug the holes with set screws, or have the tube fitted for the stock carb/choke setup. Let him know what you want. The price is about what a set of quality headers will cost, but they will bolt up to the stock exhaust.
With a little extra hand porting to open up the collector and outlet they will flow very well. I just wish I had the cutting tools to reach in deep enough to remove the bracket & bolt hole casting bosses that protrude into the #1 & #3 inlet ports ( if anyone offers guidance).
