Default Help on installing a C3 diff in a C2

I'm going to be swapping the 3.70 diff. in my '63 for a 3.08 diff from a '78 to get a little better cruising speed.

The used '78 diff. I picked up came with a front flange and it is a fair amount wider at the ujoint than the '63.

Will the front flange from the '63 fit the '78 diff. or do I have to change the ujoint or drive shaft?

I have looked at the applications for the small midyear ujoints and it looks like they were somewhat randomly used from 1955 thru 1996.

After looking at my "small ujoints" I can't imagine a mid year big block on these tiny ujoints

Thanks for anyones help.

The u joint changes, you are doing what I did (putting a '78 3:55 into my '66). It is from a Ford big car...someone else will know the part number I am sure!!

If not pm or email me

Go to a competent FLAPS and there may be a "combination" u joint which fits both the driveshaft and the pinion flange.

IF you go with a conversion joint Spicer makes a 1310 to 1330 (#5-134x) but it has a grease zerk in it. NEAPCO makes a solid joint (#2-0344) with no zerk.

Has anyone used the larger 1330 driveshaft yoke to a 1330 pinion yoke in a 63-67 frame? I don't think there's enough clearance at the top of the diff snubber mount for the larger driveshaft yoke. Jerry

Like Jerry said you can buy a combination u joint 1330 to 1310, I have used them often with no problems.

Your differential will fit your 1963 chassis just fine also, I have run a 3.08 from a 1973 with the large yoke in my 63 with no problems.

I will get flamed for this, but I have also switched the yokes and put in a new seal and torqued it down correctly and have run them many miles with no problem.

The C3 flange is a lot bigger then the C2 flange
I would recommend to change the front flange in order to avoid clearing issues.

I did the same and the C3 pinion flange clearance was minimal, better to go with the C2 flange you also dont need any conversion U-joint then.

Here some photos with C3 pinion flange

Good information and thanks for posting pics. So do both of these pics show a 1330 driveshaft flange - hard to tell? The 2nd pic diff mount bracket looks somewhat different at the top edge - are both pics the same? What's the difference in the C2 and C3 frames at the diff mount?

Thanks in advance for any more info.

Here's a '64 frame view with a '74 housing and 1330 pinion yoke flange.

Looks more or less the same clearance as mine with the 1330 if you ad U joint straps and bolts.
Mine is a 65 frame

Thanks Ray - sent you a PM. I was concerned about the clearance at the end of the 1330 driveshaft flange and the end of the diff mount. Is the driveshaft flange as wide as the pinion flange? Jerry

Just to let you konow as some of the forum members stated that is was a direct swap for them to change the pinion flange, for this was NOT the case.
The 71 BB flange had a lot more splines then my "65 SB" pinion flange.

If I check the vendors the flanges they sell are 65 to somewhere into
C3 area.

Could my pinion flange be a 64 ? (car build date Jan 14 65)?

In order to improve my clearance issue would it be ok to get a new flange like this one http://www.zip-products.com/Zip/prod...0F06D9714BBF90

You may have the coarse spline gear set used in 63-64. I don't think you'll find the large yoke to fit that. The only choice I see would be using the small yoke or installing new gears.

I think I was not clear enough I have a 71 BB 3.36 rearend installed on the frame but due the large yoke with straps and bolds I have very little clearance with the pinion snubber bracket.

I was told in my previous thread that I could swap the BB yoke with my original old rear end SB one, but the SB one has less splines (63/64?).
Does it make sence and is this possible to put a 65 SB yoke with U-bolts iso the 71BB with straps and bolts.
With U-bolts I gain clearance a 1/4 at least due to the fact that there are no bolt heads .

sorry Ray I was thinking the opposite. Yes the 71 pinion will have the 30 spline count they all had from 65-79. You can use either the 1310 (u-bolt) or the 1330( straps) yoke on that pinion. Your 65? yoke sounds like the 63-64 type and it pretty much useless. You can get the other yokes from any source. Good used ones should be about $50-$75. check the DS joint to see which joint you have. The 1330 was also used on the SB SHP cars as well as some SB automatics.

Thx for your reply GTR1999.
I will order a 1310 yoke with 30 splines found one for $75 at Dennys Driveshaft with a set of U-bolts.
The DS joint was a conversion 1310/1330 but I still have the old 1310 joint which came with the new DS I installed.

Regards
Ray
