Default Delco date codes

My 66 vert was born on May 19, 1966 according to the build tag under the dash. Can you tell me what the correct date codes for delco parts should be for this car,( alternator, regulator, fan motor, ect. Thanks,Wes

Post what you have and we can tell you if they make sense for your build date. The body build date code on the trim tag will be a day or so prior to the day it came off the line if it's a St. Louis body, but if it's an A.O. Smith body, the off-line date will be 10-14 days later, and the VIN will tell the off-line date within a day or two.

Default Delco date codes

My car is a St Louis car. the vin is S120415.The only date that I have would be the block. The cast date on the block is ( E-4-6)which I believe is correct. The other delco components have been changed through the years and are not the correct date codes. The alternator is 696 but for a 67,the reg is 515 but date is G7. Hope this helps to answer my question. Thanks,Wes

Per the "Birthday Book", '66 #120415 was built on or about April 27th, 1966; an E 4 6 block would be cast on May 4, 1966, which doesn't work for that build date. What's the body build date code on the upper left area of the trim tag? What's the block casting number, and what's stamped on the machined front pad in front of the passenger side cylinder head?

On the trim tag upper left corner reads (119) the engine block is a big block (942) The numbers on the pad are gone. Thanks, Wes

Wes:

One other piece of information is needed from the TRIM TAG. Check where it says BODY and tell me if the body number begins with an "S" or an "A". My guess is that it is a "A", which indicates and AOS built body. This is based on your reported VIN number of #20415.

The reason is that the date of I19 means April for a AOS built body and May for a St Louis built body. All cars were assembled at St Louis, but in 1966 (and a few other years) both AOS and St Louis built the fiberglass bodies.

Also the delay between the body build of April 19 and the estimated car build of April 27 based on the VIN (eight days) is consistant with the rail time between AOS and St Louis.

So to sum up , the block is the wrong date, what is an acceptable date code for the block and the components that go with it. Does anyone have a correct dated block. The engine that I have is setup as an IP block with 848 heads and the correct aluminum manifold, along with the 3247 Holly carb. Thanks for all of your help. Wes

Although NCRS accepts a block casting date up to six months prior to the car's final assembly date, 2-6 weeks is more "typical" of production. The intake and exhaust manifolds, water pump, and distributor were installed at the engine plant - everything else of a bolt-on/accessory nature was installed at St. Louis and needs to be dated prior to the car's final assembly date. I think you meant "858" heads.

The engine for #20416 (one car after yours) was listed on ebay in Sept 2008. It was stamped T0425IP and was cast on C96(march 9,1966). It had one original 3873858 head that was dated B256(feb 25, 1966) It sold for $4201.76 with 18 bidders. This should be as close as you can get.
