I have an "old school" timing light I bought off EBay I bought for my 1958, and it has some functions I don't know how to use. Perhaps someone that knows of these lights can help me. I looked for information online, but couldn't find a darn thing.
Its called a "Mopar timing Diagnostic Computer" part# 1-4000. Its a hand-held timing light with these buttons on it....RPM, DW, ADV, TEST, up-arrow, and down-arrow.
The leads hook up to the battery, one goes to the coil (+ or - ??) and the other is an inductive pickup of the spark-plug wire.
I know the RPM is obviously the RPM's of the engine...and the DW is the Dwell...but how do you use the ADV and the up and down arrows. When you touch the up or down arrows it counts up or down starting at zero.
If someone could teach me how to use this thing and make adjustments, I'm really appreciate it! Thanks!
DUDE. it sounds like my snap-on timing light. who knows without seeing it! the ADV. function works by centering the the timing mark to the 0 on the timing tab useing the up/down arrows, read the number on the light and that is the degrees before TDC. by switching between ADV. and RPM you can plot your advance curve. you can read initial advance and total advance with this light. do this with the vacuum advance disconnected. after plotting your cintrifigal advance you can hook up the vacuum advance to manifld vacuum at idle and get the vacuum advance number on the vacuum advance diaphram. play with that light, you will learn a lot...
