Default Question for C2 owners

I’m curious to know how popular the dealer option locking gas cap was. Gas was so cheap back then. I have an original locking gas cap. I’m wondering how many other C2 have it too. Let me know if you do or don’t. The repos don’t count. I’ll calculate the percentage.

Mine had one when I bought it. No way of knowing if it was original to the first owner.

My '63 coupe, of which I was the third owner in '71, had the locking gas cap.

It was nice to have during the first oil embargo.

My 65 had one when I bought it in 1974, still works fine. Not sure if it is original or aftermarket. Are there any pictures of an original and description, maybe we can tell that way.

I don't think it was a factory option . I think it was a dealer accessory.

OP said "dealer option" - seems to indicate awareness that there was no such factory RPO for the locking gas cap.

as far as determining if one is a true GM product from the time, I recall reading up on this on the old NCRS TF, should be there in the archives.

I have one, but a nickel will buy you a work around.

I believe mine is original. Here are some pics. I think the repos have a different style key.

Default Is that a vent hole in cap?

When I bought my 63 in 1975 it had the same cap+keys as 67sunfireyellow's fotos. Still have it today and works correctly. I believe the stock caps were not vented, and it appears this cap is, though.

Were the originals vented or not vented? Mine has a vent tube through it and a hole in the chrome cap.

I've got one. The first 6 months I owned the car, it was parked outside in an apartment parking lot. My wife also drove it to a high school she taught at. I bought it to avoid someone dumping sugar into the gas.

The cap had to be vented because the tank wasn't. I believe I added the gasket to mine because I was always smelling fuel when near the car. The fuel smell turned out be a pinhole leak underneath one of the straps.

In the picture you posted I see a vent tube with gasket, but no hole for the vent in the outer chrome cap. Mine has a hole drilled through the chrome cap. I wonder which is correct? Maybe it depends on year?

Non of my Vettes had locking gas caps from the factory. I also dont think there were any available to be ordered. Like someone stated, no need for locking caps. Stealing gas was never a problem in the 60`s. If you wanted one, they were available at any parts store and some gas stations. We sold the Stant brand...

The pictured cap could be and probably is a Stant. Stant was a OEM supplier.
