Anyone have experience with the dash (and door panel) dye's?
If I want to change colors (blue to black or white to blue), should I expect good results or one big mistake?
I did the complete interior in my 68 camaro, from that ugly *** yellow green to black, worked very well. Used MarHyde, spelling.
Now Duplicolor makes some good stuff. There was a segement on one of the speed channel shows, the trick was cleaning the parts to get all the dirt and stuff like armour all off so it will stick.
On a program called GearZ, a guy named Stacy David.
He used TSP, trisodiumphosphate to clean the parts, and a wax and grease remover.

Wayne, do you know of anyone local that will put paint in an aerosol can? Also for a follow up which were dyed at the factory? Thanks.
Dave
Locally? No, but you can use those deals with the propellant bottle.
One case of factory dying is the 67 bright blue. It actually has some metalic in it. You see them done on teal, black, and sometimes, saddle based dash pads. There may be others.
Many 68 cars with 414 and 411 marked blue interiors had blue dyed vinyl pieces.
One thing I've done with dyed parts, especially if they are prone to getting some wear like an arm rests, is to put a couple coats of SEM vinyl dye in semi-gloss clear over the color dye to protect it. Also if the dye color comes out a little too glossy if will flatten it down to a more natural sheen. SEM is also a very good product for dyes. I've also used PPG dye (which I think is basically some form of elastomeric lacquer paint) out of a touch up gun with great results. The Preval bottle sprayers you can pick up in hardware and automotive stores for spraying pre-mixed paints and dyes work very well too.

I died my dash, windlace and sunvisors from black to red, and I am very pleased with the results. The color is very close to the door panels. One key is in the
primer. I tried the sunvisors without die at first and it didnt cover well and took way to many coats to cover.
The 2nd key is to wash everything down carefully with SEM soap. 20 hours for the whole project. Used Corvette America dye and primer. 1 can of primer and 2 cans of
dye is enough. I used 1/4" wooden dowels under the windshield weatherstrip to raise it up so I could get some color underneath, and masked it up above the dash.

I dyed a hardtop headliner. Went from black to red. I took as much of the old black off as I could using lacquer thinner. Used the dye primer then the color coat. came out great.
Sounds like some good experiences. This tells me I should be okay. I'm considering changing my seats for C5 style, two-toned. If I do, I might two-tone my door panels with the same color accents. I'm either going blue & white or black and white.
