Default 67 big block question

I'm looking at a 400 hp 67. The car has few options. 4 speed, radio, side pipes. I've never seen a 400 horse so option less. Any one come upon one this stripped? Haven't dug too deep yet into the numbers just seems odd from my experience. What do you guys think?

Don't forget, more BB's exist now then were produced. Maybe someone just wanted an even number for HP, 4 gears to shift and side pipes to hear above a radio. The 400HP was the least expensive 3x2 BB. Dennis

Some guys just didn't want to play with the solid lifters so they went for the 400 HP.

Lets see...427 with 3X2's, 4 speed, radio and side pipes...probably has a steering wheel and disc brakes...what the heck else would you need? Sound's like heaven to me...

Your describing my car, 67 400 hp, 4 speed, am/fm radio, side pipes, EZ eye tinted windows, black vinyl seats, and thats it. I always wondered who ordered my car and what their thinking was. I've changed some things since 1984 when I bought my car, AC, 502, 5 speed, black leather. I'm having fun.

Very good points about not wanting to deal with solid lifters. Initial thought was maybe a drag car, but why not go an extra $130 for the 435 hp. Russ thanks for you info. I've always seen them with more creature comforts like headrests, ps, pb, a/c and a lot of automatics. I'm thinking the pipes might of been added on later. Got to dig in more and I'll let you all know. Thanks again everyone. I guess the most important option is that I love the look of the three deuces .............

I know a 67 coupe with 427/400, 4speed, AM/FM radio and no other options. This car was built the second week of September 1966. The current owner's father owned a Chevrolet dealership and this was the first 67 3x2 Corvette they got in. His father kept the car and when the father passed away, the son got it.

You have to remember, in the 60's it was pretty common to order cars without all the options we see today. Of the 23,000 67's built, only 11,300 had full tinted glass, 3,800 had air and 4,700 had power brakes. A car without options was much more common than one loaded with them. A 67 coupe with just a 427/400, 4 speed, AM/FM, white walls and posi stickered for about $5,100, while a convertible with both tops, 327/350, 4 speed, AM/FM, P/S, P/B, white walls and posi was about $4,900. You add steering, brakes and air to that 400hp coupe and it puts it pretty close to $6,000, a lot of money for a car in 1967. If this car was ordered by a dealer for inventory, he'd find it a lot easier to sell a $5,000 one than a $6,000 one. This is why high optioned cars demand a premium today.

My '67 L68 convertible has leather, telescopic wheel, speed minder, shoulder belts, transistor ignition.... and AM-FM with M21 4 speed. Documented with original window sticker. Interesting options...no PS, PB or PW.

it wasn`t the cost so much as was the weight and power robbing options.

Default Few options ordered, but a Ton of Power

.
Weight was a factor in all cars including the high HP Vettes during the 60`s if the thought of racing was on the purchasers mind. They were the only cars where you had a good chance of winning at the track or street. The biggest and best bet for racing was L88 power. But no heater or radios were available in the Vettes getting L88`s from the factory. The easy solution was to order a 435 car with a streo radio and heater and then get a dealer to co-operate and warranty the 435 and you pay the difference between the 435 and L88. Now you had the best available or offered by GM. A Vette with L88 power, radio, and a heater for cold Northern winters. Sort of tricky way to do this but it worked and they had a 5 year 50,000 mile guarantee on the drive train. All you needed was a friendly co-operative dealer...

Not everyone went for the biggest engine they could get at the time even if they were looking for fun. Probably many more standard engine GTO, 4 speed cars sold than tri-power and ram air cars. More standard engine 442 cars with 4-speed than W-30s. A 427/400 4-speed car with decent gears could probably rule over 95% of the muscle cars it came up against back then and as noted above - he didn't have to adjust the valves. And it still was a 427, tri-power Corvette!!

My 67 435hp had factory power steering but no power brakes. It was special ordered and according to Noland Adams, was the only car produced with the color and options combination it had. I never could understand why anyone would want power steering and not include power brakes.

The shame of it is after Pro Team got ahold of the car, it now has PS, PB, headrests, teak wheel, etc.
