Are there any vendors out there than sell a 427 conversion kit (less engine) to convert a SB car to a BB car? Seems like someone would have come up with this by now. Just curious...
Probably not because there would be parts missing for some buyers and others would want less parts. Most of the parts are available and these Vette Parts stores will be glad to personalize any put together kit exactly as you would want. Some even offer a token discount the more you buy.
Hi Dave, how's that project of yours doing? Maybe you'ld like to take on this project when you're done
I understand what you mean, I just am in love with my car, except for the engine so I don't really want to sell it. With a 41 year old engine, I feel like I have to baby it and don't trust it to go anyplace very far away. I'd like to have a car I can drive and enjoy, not just show. Plus I think I can do this for a lot less than selling mine (not the right time right now with todays market), and buying a big block that could have it's own problems. Not interested in NCRS; not interested in building a clone to sell. Still expect to have this car for many more years. Just want the fun of POWER too. Going nuts over that zz427
Anyway, hope you and your family have a Happy Holiday season. Nick

The project is coming along nicely. The chassis is about finished and we'll drop the drive train in over the holidays. I started stripping paint last weekend, and outside of being messy, it's not a hard job. We plan to be ready to paint in March if all goes well.
You really ought to consider a nice 383 for your car. I know it's not a BB, but a lot easier to drop in and there are a few builders making them in the 450 hp range and run pump gas. That's enough of an upgrade to scare the crap out of you if you go about it correctly.
Just for academic purposes, I wonder what really is involved in swapping to a big block. On my 69 Z28 I had back in the 70's, it seems I only needed different motor mounts, radiator hoses, accesory mounting brackets, flywheel, fuel line modification and exhaust. But that was a long time ago and I could be wrong.
I did exactly what you are thinking about doing...it was a pretty long list of things to change but not too bad... If i were to do it again i would buy one of the new LS or LSX series motors. They have a fairly new one that has 515 hp with a really nasty sounding cam from GM parts...that you can add a carb to and have a reliable monster. I might be able to remember most things I had to do. PM me and I can get your e-mail address and start a nice list for you.
So in theory, if the engine I'm thinking about putting in (zz427) is 5 pounds lighter than my L79 (530 vs 535), would I have to change my front springs, sway bar, etc.? Why couldn't that be a fairly easy swap?
And Dave, I hear you about the 383...but I've always had this dream about having a Big Block Corvette. I thought I had it "under control" but the bug is the bug. It's got to be a big block...it's not about HP, I know a built 383 would probably run all over it...it's about having a BB under that stinger hood that is just magic to me. I can't buy a BB car; no one is selling them for what I can aford to pay, but I believe I can come close to reproducing one, even if it's not to NCRS standards. But like I said before, it's down the road a while before I do this...I'm just trying to get as much info ahead of time as I can. Thanks...

At least you're honest, but don't forget the new shop and the lift you absolutely have to get before you tackle it.

Anyone know of the specifics to this swap?
Just to swap the engine, that list looks like a good start. I wouldn't be surprised to find that you would want a new engine wiring harness if you didn't feel like Bubbaing a bunch of wires, and other little things like that along the way. But if you want your whole car to be a big block car, there would be more to the story than that. Suspension changes and a differnt tach come to mind, rear ends were different in at least some of the years between sb and bb. I am sure there are numerous other differences.
Small block was a better street package back in the day, and makes more sense today with all the aftermarket support that will build a small block to any hp level you can afford. Except for L-88 and ZL-1, big blocks are truck engines.
If it makes you feel better, just swap a '66 or '67 427 hood and sidepipes onto your mouse-motored C2!

Absolutely- that's why those crappy 'truck-motored' Mid-Years go for over twice the $$$ than for a small block car- cause they stunk so bad nobody even wants one..............
Hell, the Edsel was even better, right?
(Sorry- I couldn't resist tossing the bomb back- I'm gonna leave now).
