My 58 has a 59 block that I would like to replace, and the heads are suspect. After an extensive internet search, I find several potential head and block casting numbers listed for a '58 290HP fuelie. Does anyone have the definitive correct numbers, or a reliable source for this vehicle? It was built in late fall 1957, 290HP fuel injected, 4 speed trans. I would hate to buy a block and heads only to loose points in an NCRS meet for incorrect casting numbers..
Re: "Correct" head and block casting numbers (Lee)
Lee, I am not sure how "definitive" this info is, it depends on your opinion of the Corvette Black Book. I have found it to be correct in most of the things that Ihave done, but also have heard of some descrepances over the years.
Any way here is the info according to the black book.
1958 block#
3737739 or 3756519: all applications.
1958 heads #
3748770: all applications staggered bolt holes.
Re: "Correct" head and block casting numbers (DaBo)
I f you're planning to have it judged by NCRS, you ought to purchase a copy of their judging manual for your 58, which likely will answer that type of question.
Re: "Correct" head and block casting numbers (waynec)
As a late fall 1957-built car, the correct block for your car is probably the 3737739; the 519 block was used on "mid-to-late" 1958's, per the NCRS Spec Guide. The NCRS 1958-60 Corvette Technical Manual & Judging Guide should show what the actual breakpoint was between the two blocks. The new 4th Edition of this guide is now available, and is absolutely essential to guide you if you intend to have the car judged - get it BEFORE you start buying parts, not after.
Re: "Correct" head and block casting numbers (JohnZ)
Thanks John. Actually, I have that book, I better read it more carefully. It seems however, that there a dozen or so different "official" lists on the internet, especialy for heads, citing different numbers. Hence the question. I have a spare '58 739 block, but the date is about 2 months after the cars build date....no good. Sounds like the NCRS book is the bible, so I will revisit that. This car is so close to original that I might as well do it right even if I never do have it judged.
