there are different physical size batteries that should have sufficient amps to start your engine, so the first thing i suggest you do is find out the physical size of various batteries available, go to a store (Walmart or an auto parts store where they have a large supply of batteries and make measurements), then determine how big a space you have to put the battery in. (remember, you should make a stainless steel tray to sit the battery in and hold it down, so you have to make allowances for being able to get the battery in/out of the tray in that space.)
Someone right here on CF posted pictures of a battery relocation to the trunk several months ago. It was a beautiful, very professional looking mod (actually, I don't think the factory could have done a finer job!). It was soooooooooooo nice, I've even considered doing it to the 56!
Maybe that person will chime in soon.
it seems apparent that there is more room in a 62 than in a 58 , so i will have to look for a smaller battery , or cut out in the spare tire well to accommodate an optima .

2 people have relocated the battery, in 2 different ways (and posted pix).
Charles Bernhardt posted pictures of what he had done when i was looking to relocate my battery after my EFI conversion (most of the electronics are where the battery was); and that is how i relocated mine.
Herb (First Gear) made an offset pocket in his spare tire well to locate his battery.

You are correct on the trunk size. The only trunk mounted batteries I have ever seen, other than Herb's in 56-60s, have had the battery bolted in the spare tire tube. Both my '62s have the batts in the trunks.
The black car has the batt. in a steel box for NHRA rules and the red car has a little more complex installation in the trunk.
I am contemplating the same in my 60. My thought is to extend a tray into the wheel well so that the battery will be completely into that area.
Many of the sealed batteries can be on their side which may help reduce the vertical dimension. Also, there is a group 95 battery but the most powerful I have seen is 550 cca but that should do the job in most cases.
See Jegs or Summit catalogs.

On a related subject , as part of the restomod project I will need to find a place to put the computer . engine bay ? kick panel ? trunk ? any thoughts .

mine is located on the engine side of the firewall in the area where the battery used to be. splash pan was made removable for easy access.
i remember that AZDoug put his on the bulkhead behind the passenger's seat.
My computer is the same place yours is, above where the battery used to be. No way to get wires from engine to behind the seat.
I did make a terminal strip block that sort of looks like a battery, from the top, that is 4" tall and held in place by the old battery retainer, that the trunk monuted battery cables terminate to, and all the electrics feed off of including the hot cable to the starter.
The tech inspector at the last drag race didn't pick up that the battery was somepalce else, of course all those EFI wires, that are missing in your picture, help obscure it.

I have mine behind the drivers seat. EZ to get to, protected from the elements, but my seats tilt forward. The tilting seats are handy for many reasons. The passenger seat also has electronics behind it also.

The tech guy probably did not know where the batt. went. I passed the first couple of times I raced, until they got used to the car. Also they will want an emergency shut off switch, accessible from the rear of the car. You can see mine in the black car picture, but it is not legal (mine is there for instant disconnect when the car is not in use). To make it legal I would have to drill a hole thru the rear of the car and attach a rod to activate the switch, FAT CHANCE of that.

Exactly. No holes in my car.
I don't/won't race much, especially with the new paint. Any way, the Friday night drags are supposed to be run what ya brung, even though last time some tech ******* told me I needed extra long lugs and see thru lug nuts on my car, but the turbo Porsche, and everything else there didn't get a lug nut inspection.
He even asked me where my fire suit was.... I looked at him like he was from Mars.

Let me rephrase my earlier comment.
No easy way, without spending some serious hours building a wiring harness, to put the computer behind the seat.
Yes, the flip seat helps, installing a factory seat is a pain.

The lug nut rule and lots of others are because your car is modified. The turbo Porsche is stock. He skates on lots of stuff. They do that because too many fools will change wheels and put lugs on that only catch a few threads. The tracks have lots of insurance requirements to stay in business. Fire suit? He must have thought your car was really fast. As for the lugs, the 7/16" ones can be easily broken.
We rent the track several times a year, only 20 cars, good times, but the same rules apply as a national event for their insurance responsibilities.
I went for about 30 years not drag racing because of family, building a business, and what ever, now my greatest fun is racing these old cars against cars that are equal to mine.

Yes, I built my own harness. The flip seats are great for so many reasons. I have probably pulled the seats 10 times in the black car for seemly minor reasons.
