I need to replace my tach cable on my '64 vette. I've noticed that you can get them in different colors. Which is the correct color for my car. The ivory one is twice the cost of the black one, is that due to it being the original color for that year tach cable?
Lots of different places to buy a new one. I did a study some time back and determined that most original 64 tach cables were actually black. The reproductions types are made a bit different and are not marked TELFLEX as the originals. If originality doesn't matter than let me know because I have a reproduction I could sell you.
Good luck,
Craig

Craig,
Thanks for the info on the tach cable. The one I currently have on the car is black. I've heard that you can have them rebuilt, but not sure who does them. Considered buying one when I saw there were different colors. Trying to keep the car as original as possible. I'll pm you if I decide to purchase one.
I just had my '64 tach converted to electric for my LS2 conversion.. I'll check at the shop this weekend for the original cable - it works fine and you're welcome to it if you want it (and i can find it).. let me know what markings to check for to determine if it is original..

cdrag284,
Not sure what is wrong and why you need a new one, but if it's just not working, you can always by the 'guts' cable and re-install in your black housing.....

cdrag264,
I guess I'd be curious as to why you think you need to replace your tach cable? How'd did you determine it is your tach cable that is the culprit? What are your symptoms?
With that asked....You can simply pull the cable out of the housing, try re-lubing it and re-install. Check housing for cracks, because if there are cracks, it'll leak new lube.
Another trick is to use a variable speed drill on distributor side (In Reverse) to check function to tach gauge.
Finally if the ends of cable are worn...you can simple take a little off the end(s) by shortening the squared end so it easily seats in the socket again. Try removing about an 1/8 inch or less, if you suspect a binding where the cable enters the tach itself.
If it turns out you need a new cable (guts) only, try LIC.
RoadKing96. I was getting a grinding/spinning noise than the tach quit. I assumed it to be the cable that failed. Thanks for all the info, hopefully I can work on it this weekend.

Have to agree....mine has the original cable. Car was purchased new by my father so I know for a fact that its original.
How do I check the cross gear in the distributor? Do I have to take the distributor out to do it? Thanks
Yes. Two of the photos below show a good (new) cross gear and a shot inside the distributor cavity that shows a good mainshaft gear; the third photo shows a cross gear and mainshaft gear that are shot. Both gears are steel, and if one is shot, the other one is too; if the cross gear teeth are shot and you just replace it, the new one will fail in short order. If you find damaged teeth, you need to replace both the cross gear AND the distributor mainshaft.
