They mentioned the black exhaust...didnt seem to have a reason for it!! Just sold a 59 with 2x4's and a 283/245 with 3 'thousand' original miles for $200k in maybe 2 minutes!!! (Nice to have money!) I guess yiu guys are right, the guys with the $$$ still have it to pay for the real nice cars!!!

Default Black exhaust

In Noland Adam's 53-62 reference book, many of the original factory photos of the chassis show black exhaust systems.

My understanding is the pipes were wiped down with a mild protectant to keep them from getting surface rust before getting to the customer, and that the black protectant burned off pretty quickly.

The good news - if I'm wrong, I'll be corrected by 10 am CST on Saturday.

I saw the 59 for 200k...I don't see how anyone could only put 3k miles on a car in 50 years.

I hate to say it for those of us who want to get into this hobby. But prices are UP for real cars.

Anyone see that Red 67 L-79 Convert? Went for $100,000 + commissions? Or that Blue 67 300hp A/C Convert that went for $90K + commissions. Alternative investments are doing ok right now.

I saw both of those and scratched my head. But why should we be surprised by anything that goes on in this fantasy land. BJ is not reflective of the market for these cars. I still enjoy watching it though

"mitting" of exhaust is accepted by some, but not all, of those who are into originality

Yeah, I kind of treat it as a pre-delivery condition item. When these cars were unloaded from the truck, the hubcaps were in the trunk. But the hubcaps are on the car for NCRS/Bloomington judging, because that's the consumer-delivered configuration.

Just to clarify, there was NEVER any "mitting" - the sticky black chassis blackout paint was sprayed, not "mitted". It'll take a while, as revision teams catch up, to have all references to "mitting" removed from the NCRS Judging Guides.

The yellow '66 427 coupe that just sold was reasonable. It looked really nice too.

Thanks John for the clarification. I couldnt remember anywhere that said it was ok to have black exhaust system and that car had all the BG and NCRS awards so I was curious about that.

John what's the cause the black exhaust systems shown in those factory photos in Noland's book?

From personal experience to put a 54 police interceptor into a 32 coupe, rear sump required, had to buy a 55 T bird pan. BJ speed people said it could not be done so "everyone" put in a chev motor.

It was the first T-Bird ever built, so pretty significant in Blue Oval World.

I don't know - I've only been watching off and on but except for some unique cars like the first Thunderbird, some of the sales look pretty soft. What did the yellow Canadian Hemi Cuda Coupe with original motor go for - $155,000? Wasn't that a $500,000 car a few years ago and 71 convertibles going for $1 to 2 M? Even the $290K for the COPO ZL1 struck me as kind of low for B-J, not to mention the bidding shinanigans. I thought they were going to have to hammer it at $150k. The $270k for the following Yenko Camaro sounded more like the B-J we know.

I haven't seen many of the Corvette sales however.

Still looks like the car auction counterpart to the best, drunken, Roman orgy, with folks with way too much disposable income - that anyone ever threw.
