Tried backing the car out of the garage this morning and it would not move in reverse.I jacked the rear up and took off the drums and everthing appeared to be OK.I left the car jacked up and then tried reverse and both wheels spin freely. As soon as I lower the car on the ground in will not go move in reverse.Any suggestions ???

it could be a simple shifter adjustment, sounds like you are stuck in two gears at once, move the reverse lever by hand and see if the two side cover levers are in the center position by hand, this will put you back in neutral...good luck

Sorry I should have given a better description. The shifter works fine and shifts in all gears gears including reverse. The shifter goes into reverse without any problems. Its like something has the car locked when trying to back up.Going forward is no issue.

unless there is some obstruction at the wheels or a flex brake hose not releasing it could be reverse is not fully dis engaging at the shifter and when you put it in any forward gear it is still in reverse too , hence you are in two gears at once and this locks the running gear the opposite is true also if it has not released one of the forward gears....it happens...good luck

Reason: the opposite is true

This must be stated as I have performed this several times in my youth with my '56 Chevy Handyman Wagon. The tough part was getting one side up on the curb to access the underside ! Even though the shift levers at the trans may look even it is best to lock them into neutral by hand so that you can actually feel it.

VicZ, what was the fix? I ask because this exact problem happens to me at times when I first back the 60 out of the the garage, but the car locks up only when I try to put it into first. Reverse works fine, but when I try to put it into 1st it is like someone is putting the brakes on. This only happens when the car is taken out for the first time of the day, not when it is warmed up.

hey strat. it usually is a sign of mis adjusted linkage or worn bushings or worn tranny forks, the latter being rare though. simply get under the car and hand shift each linkage arm to neutral and then check alignment of the shifter arms at the shifter and bushings. you are not fully coming out of reverse or one of the fprward gears

It was a combination of 2 things.First the linkage for reverse needed to be adjusted and second I just had the car soda blasted.I thought I did a good job in using the power washer and cleaning the motor and underside up but the linkage was coated with soda blasting material.Sure makes it easy to clean up when you have the inside gutted.
