Default 67BB replace with crate motor?

I have been thinking about removing my numbers matching 67BB, replace with a crate motor and store the original. The car is a good driver and is in excellent shape, no current problems I am just worried that if I damage something in the engine BIG$$$, maybe unable to repair! Does anyone have any ideas as to a good replacement?

the 454 GM sells is a direct replacement where you can use all your accessory's from your 427

When I bought my '65 396 roadster it came with a '72 402 in the car and the original block out of the car. I have purchased the heads and other parts to complete the engine at a later date but have chosen to do the same thing and have installed a 1969 396 Camaro motor in the car. I have the same concerns about damaging the original block! Probably a good choice if you just want the car to be a nice driver! Good Luck!

I replaced the BB with an SB. Better mileage, easier on the drivetrain too.
I also bagged the 66 trans and dif in favor of a 65 trans and a 73 dif.

I've considered the GM 454's but have read about a few people having oil control issues. Supposedly this is related to the "low tension" rings or not using honing plates. There was also a couple here that had distributer gears wear prematurely. Anyone know if these issues are still a problem?

I have a zz454 in my 67 Coupe and it installed without any issues. A few months ago the distributor gear failed. It turned out when I purchased the melonized gear it was the wrong gear in the the box (it was marked with the correct part number). All is well now and it runs perfectly with no oil consumption issues. I have 22,000 miles on it and it uses about 1/2 quart in 3,000 miles. It is a pretty good value considering the price and 2 year 50,000 mile warranty.

Default Create Motor?

When I had my restoration done in 03-04, I chose a GMPP 454 HO.

Its been a good engine with no problems, but if I had it to do over,
I would probably go with a ZZ454. The higher compression and
aluminum heads (less weight) would be worth the few extra $s.

The 454 HO seems perfectly OK with regular though. The ZZ,
maybe not....

I had considered doing this for my 66' 427 coupe I've owned for 29 years. When I did the restoration I had the engine checked and there was basic very little wear. Cylinders were honed and new bearing was all it needed. I decided keep the original engine in the car. It had lasted 40 + years and was still in great condition, plus with the rebuild it was brand new again. It will definitely last another 40 years until another engine rebuild. And by then I sure won't care what happens to it!!

I don't know, I just feel better when a car is all in a one piece.... instead of in boxes waiting for the next owner.

Thank you to all the responses. Some good comments for review. The zz454 looks interesting, although the original runs like a top. Maybe 1/2 quart over 2000mi. |Am I opening a can of worms-I wonder!!

Are you racing your car? Are you driving / revving the engine in such a way as to be worried about damage? I think we tend to worry too much about "what if" damage, these cars were built to drive - enjoy and don't worry.

Although, the $23k could buy you another car.

You must change the flywheel to a 454`s.

Harps, that's the Anniversary Edition 427, and you're right, it's big bucks. But the zz427 essentially is the same engine with an iron block instead of aluminum...and you save about 15k...you can even order the flashy AE427 natural valve covers (GM p/n 19202588) instead of the black ones the zz427 comes with if you like the look.
