I just measured the original one out of my '57 and it is 49" using the same measuring points.

I've done it--hardest part was getting the longer column out of the 54. It's about a 2" difference--I'm 6' 3" and 220--made the 54 much more drivable. You do really have to want to drive it!

Default Thanks to all...

especially Duntov -097 and wmf62 for the exact measurements. Guess the next question is - does anyone have a '58-'62 for sale or trade? kent@schoneman.net

From my notes, that's exactly what I got when I restored my '57 and used a '61 gear/column in it; swapped with a (skinny) friend who had a '61 column in his '57 and wanted it correct.

You may want to reconsider shortening the one you have and putting a collapsible shaft in the middle so if you ever have an accident you won't get speared by the column. It doesn't feel too good going through the ribs....

Probably no more expensive than buying a rebuilt good 58-62 column.

a collapsible shaft won't help unless the tube collapses too. might as well go to a Flaming River or Ididit column (at least that way you get working turn signals/brake lights/4-way flashers.. )

Obviously you would leave part of the tube out too.

You can build a column a lot cheaper than buying a Flaming River or Iditit column using race car tubing and some bearings. The consistent turn signals would be a plus if you went with one of the pre-mades though.

It also would let you move in closer to the dash at least another inch. I have the bell right against the dash on mine.

Default Ididit column

Bill:

How would you attach that to the steering box?

Default Important!!

One thing to remember during the swap, is to make shure you put plenty of towels and a pan to catch the oil from the gearbox as you will have to elevate the gearbox higher than the steering wheel end at one point before pulling it out thru the firewall to the engine comp side

unfortunately, you would have to cut your original column tube and shaft and then use a coupling or u-joint to connect the new column shaft to the old shaft, then use a sleeve to connect the original tube to the new tube.
