How much difference in weight is there between a SB and a BB? How about the difference between new gen BBs ZZ502 and a mid year 427 ? I know they put heavier springs in the mid years when you ordered a BB. Just wandering what the actual weight differences are and if the savings in going to AL intake and heads is worth talking about ?
SB to BB is about 150 pounds. Aluminum block BB said to weigh slightly less then iron block SB. Of course, aluminum heads and intake alter the weights as well.
A fully dressed all iron BB is about 150 pounds heavier than a similarly dressed SB , and aluminum heads cut the difference about in half.
An all aluminum BB (ZL-1) would weight in about the same as an equivalently dressed iron SB, and an all aluminum SB looses about 150 pounds compared to its all iron brethren.
Be careful when compariing engine weights, because it depends on what's on them. A "fully dressed" engine would be as was installed at the plant, which would include the exhaust manifolds, carb, starter motor, flywheel and bellhousing, and all the front end accessories for that configuration including the fan.
A fully dressed iron SB with just an alternator and fan would be around 550 pounds and off the top of my head, I'd say an aluminum inlet manifold will save about 15 pounds.
My understanding is Alum heads on a big/block remove approx 90LBS, My 1966 427 convertable, has Alum heads , Alum Iintake, mini starter, no p/s, no p/b ,no spare, no spare carrier assy, mono leaf composite rear spring & wieght in at 3080 LBS on the electronic scale at New England dragway ,without me in it ...this is with 1/2 tank of fuel, also 396 427 454 , equally equipped, all wiegh in about he same, dont have any idea about the 502 big boy but guessing within 20 LBS............just my 2 cents . :seeya
