strange thing. On my 66 coupe wipers, I turned the switch on and it clicked on either high or low but the wipers didn't work but the key was off. How can the wiper motor or switch get power if the key is off. Then later even with the key off and the switch off the wipers where moving very slowly. I pulled the plugs off the wiper motorof to turn it off. What is going on. Is the current going thru the relay to the motor on it's own. Any help would be appreciated. Please don't tell me I have to yank it out and fix it. Then I thought it might be a ground problem. I ran a ground wire to the case of the wiper motor to the battery ground and all I saw then was smoke from the wire used. What is going on. Help Rich

Have you had the starter out recently?
It sounds like you have the two thin black wires (one on the solenoid and one under the starter mount bolt) with large ring terminals hooked up backwards.
I did have the starter out for rebuild. I thought the black wires go on the large solenoid bolt. I think I put them both on the solenoid center large terminal. Is there 2 black wires with large bolt terminals I must be losing it. Which one goes to the solenoid and one goes to ground on the starter bolts I just don't remember. I had the engine out for rebuild and it took 8 months so I just don't remember. How can I figure it out. Thanks Rich
It is the wire that goes to the heater fan motor ground and on to the wiper. Just check it with an ohm meter if you cannot follow it. This is a common mistake. I fixed one yesterday that was done like that years ago, and bubba re-wired it to work. You should have seen his mess.

I ran the new engine for only a few mins that way before a fuel pump leak came up so I shut it off and disc battery. How much damage did I do. I will use an ohm meter to find the correct ground wire and put it on the mounting bolt of the starter. Thanks for all your help it was amazing that you guys went right to the problem. Regards Rich

Probably no damage. The wiper and fan motors are basically isolated by fiberglass. Just get it changed back.
Thanks yes the starter wires are the culprit. The black wire with a red wire on one large eyelet goes on the battery conn on the solenoid and the single black wire with the large eye goes on the starter mounting bolt. That black wire only purpose is to give a ground to the blower motor and wiper motor. It seems to be okay I don't believe I did any damage. Thanks a lot it was easy with your help. My only problem now is that the starter drags when you go to start it and then starts. It is rebuilt, although it was dynoed. It is a 390 hp 427 done to stock specs Maybe it will loosen up. Do you reco one of these high torque starters or did I do something wrong again. Battery ground on to engine using heavy duty cables. It's the original starter rebuilt, did not drag before. Thanks again Rich

Do you have the starter brace installed from the top stud on the forward end of the starter to the boss on the side of the block? Starters aren't designed to be supported only by the two main attaching bolts.

Thanks for responding yes I am using the bracket to hold up the other end. I replaced the 1/4 in 6 inch long bolt with a threaded rod so I would have a place to latch onto. My connections are good and my grounds are good. Thanks for the help Rich
