Default steering box

I am going to install a new steering box.It seems to me that you need to find the center of the gear so you have the same turns going right and left.Is this a dumb question?? I would hate to install it then take out a couple of times to get it right......Thanks..........Vince

Just turn it right to lock and left to lock. Put it in the middle. Then when it is installed on the car, the tie rods will have to be adjusted to get it as close as possible to centered. It may or may not be close, depending on previous alignments.

I replaced my box, you can install it centered but you will have to check once on the car and possibly adjust the tie rods, I did.

If I remember correctly, when you turn lock to lock and find approximate center, look at the splines on the shaft of the steering box, you will see a spline that looks different from the rest, use it as a guide for centering your arm on the shaft. You will be very close.
