windshield wiper fluid pump help?
Okay, my wipers work fine but the fluid pump doesn't.
As I looked into the root cause, first I found that there was no fluid and no fluid line to the pump. I fixed both issues, and still nothing. After priming the pump, I got it to work. The problem is that it doesn't have enough pump suction to keep itself primed. I hear the pump "ticking", but it just doesn't have enough suctioin to pull fluid out of the tank.
Are there any tricks that I should be aware of?
I see there are a few different rebuild kits: "Bellows" kit and then a standard Kit. Which one (or both) do I need?
Thanks, Chris

Rebuild It
Sounds like you have a problem with the main diaphragm leaking, or one of the "check valve" discs is stuck.
If the rubber parts are old, I'd just go ahead and change them. There's a trick in removing the main diaphragm. Push in and rotate 180 degrees to release it from the shaft, as I recall from too many years ago.

there are add on washer pumps (electric) that work with wiring from push **** on wiper control. (63 swc) Cost about 10 bucks, work real well (no vacum needed) mounts next to stock pump. Not original but better. good luck Abe G

Would like to thank you in advance.

Checked JC Whitney They have them, thanks for the heads up. I'll disc. the pump to get rid of ticking.

Abe...is this the link to the pump you are talking about?

Anyone else have experience with that pump?
Assuming I decide to rebuild the pump, I need advise on rebuild kits. I see two types of kits (neither with much detail): "basic" and "Bellows" kits. Should I buy both or not?

Not bad for 14 bucks! I'd like to hear about the rebuild kits though. Where are they offered? Mechron and I connected hot to the pump and NO sound came from it, so I think it's dead. Any info will help me too. Thanks.

Astrodokk...the pump will only work when the wiper motor is running. Basically what happens is, when you push the button on the switch, you power up an electromagnet which pulls in a lever which is connected to the pump. After the lever completes a cycle it returns to the resting position.

I've found the rebuild kits at most of the "corvette" supply houses: Corvette Central, Zip, Corvette America.
Just not sure if I should buy one type or both. I guess for an extra 20 bucks, buy both.

Everything I ordered from Corvette Central for the wiper motor was back ordered. When I called they claim their supplier is responsible for the delay as there was a quality control problem. This happens every time you order something from Corvette Central. Go to one of the other suppliers and call them first to see if they actually have the kit.
By the way, I ordered my kit on March 1 and on March 2 I received this from Corvette Central.
Qty: 1
Item: 652051
Description: WASHER PUMP REPAIR-COMPLETE
*Expected Date: 03/08/09
I still do not have the kit and no date of when they will have it for shipping either.

Bummer about the back order. I have been there too.
When I connected a hot wire and test light to the pump connector at the firewall, then pressed the button on the wiper switch, the test light turned on but the pump didn't do anything, not even a whir. I saw the pump repair kit in CC, but could the little electric motor be bad too? I took the metal cover off and it was pretty dirty in there, like dried mud. Should it have at least made a sound?

electric add on pump windsheild washer.
As previous,, this was an *** import years ago and is still being offered by most all auto acessory shops. Works real well, is a separate electric motor and pump. Much superior to original gm vacum set up. Regards, Abe G I beleive it can be fitted to all years and makes of cars

Boy was this simple. I bought a $15 washer pump @ summit (right up the road from me) and put it between the fluid tank and the stock washer pump. I unhooked the + & - wires from the old, plugged them into the new pump. Presto....I have windshield washer fluid. I didn't remove my old pump or do anything to it. Everything works perfect. I mounted the pump right next to the old one with velcro just in case I wanted to repair the original. (I bet I wont).
Call me Bubba, but this works great.
Thanks for the suggestions...they worked great.
Here's the link to the part. I'm sure it's available at most local auto part stores.
