Default Ignition shield liner

Has anyone ever experienced an intermittent ignition problem because their IGNITION SHIELD LINER was missing? My liner on the top cover is missing and once in a while I have an intermittent misfire. I have new wires, cap, rotor, etc. By the way, this is on a 1966 427/390 car with stock shielding. As I indicated, the problem is intermittent. when I removed the top cover and drove the car it seemed fine. But the problem may or may not show itself at any given time.

It's quite a possibility, it was on there for a reason. Suspect you're getting a little leakage from the plug wires to the uninsulated sheild. Bill.

My thoughts exactly Bill. I am just wondering if anyone else has experienced the problem. Thanks for your reply.

My 66 427/390 with TI works fine without it, I purchased the liner but haven't been able find what material I need to attach it with.

Gary, can't speak for the BB, but my SB used 2 plastic or nylon rivets. Bill.

Yep, sure have!! But mine wasn't intermittent, showed up after I had run my car for a short time without the SS ignition shield installed. When I put it back on, wouldn't start. Removed the cover, started fine. Then I found the inner cover was gone, a burned spot where current was leaking to the cover. A new liner and two plastic rivets from LIC cured the problem.

Correctomundo!! The liner is there for a purpose!!

My liner was in place, but had a burnt spot where it had been arched through. Same problem as others noted, misfire when the top cover was on, fine with it off.

Thanks Ron,

As I thought, it is there for a reason. Going to order it and install and we will see. Some say to use nylon rivets to install, I don't see how that works, no holes. I guess just use silicone?

Mine had a couple of small holes in the top of the shield for the small rivets. When I got into doing mine, I also found out there were several (maybe 5 or 6) variations of the mid-year ignition shield, don't remember what the exact differences were, but I'd check LIC catalog to see if they may list them. I believe that's where I wound up ordering my liner from.

There may have been a thread here as well, you might try doing a search (if it works ), should be 6 months to a year ago as I recall.

Edit: Here's a link to LIC's page, I don't see offhand where there was an ignition shield without the holes, although they do show some differences. http://www.licorvette.com/pdfcatalogfiles/cat/30.pdf Maybe someone with a little more knowledge will choose to share it with us!!

Thanks again Ron. I used your LIC link to look at the big block top cover and it doesn't show any holes. My car is a 390 HP car, so that is correct.

Yesterday was a beautifully day here in SW Florida so I took the car our without the cover again and no misfires, and it ran great. I will use clear silicone and fasten to see if my intermittent problem is solved.

Thanks for your help.

OOPPS!! Sorry about giving you the incorrect link, although I see you've overcome my misdirection! I didn't realize yours was a big block, mine are all small blocks and I gave you the small block page.

Glad you're able to find out about your particular situation!!

I think some of the variances were the # of rivets and what they were made of. I think early ones were metal and then they changed to nylon.

That's right, but again it applies to small blocks. He's got a big block, they didn't use any rivets.
