Sidepipe install question

Probably a stupid question but I was just trying to figure out why 2 of the sidecover holes are "U" slotted? I don't have the trim strips yet, but the AIM shows the only screw attachments are on the ends. If I put the screws in these holes they won't hold anything!? WOW, do these pipe rock!! Thanks!
