Default 62 wiper switch question

I put the cluster in today and noticed, although my wiper switch works, there are no spots where the switch clicks into position if you will. In other words I can just turn the **** without any resistance. Is this correct or is there supposed to be two or three positions or speeds for the wipers. Thanks,

Bill

Sounds correct. As you move the ****, you are just operating a cable which moves a thingy which triggers a doo-hickey, well you get the idea.

Thanks Jeff, I was hoping you were around tonight. Maybe I should just fly you over here to GA for a few days.

There are two speeds, but no detents in the cable or in the switch that would identify the difference between the two.
I've also found that you need to bring it down from top speed to slow before you try to make them park, otherwise they tend to pick wherever they want to park.

While I have you guys here, is that cable and washer line routed above or below the steering column. I noticed it would work both ways but couldn't find a picture in the AIM to see. Thanks again for the help.

Interesting. I've only used mine to prove it worked for the judges. I knew there was no detent, guess I never noticed only 2 discrete speeds.

I ran mine above the steering column (we're talking under the dash, not in the firewall area).

Hmmm, maybe I'd better go check my car to be sure...

Just checked - yes my cable goes over the column and exits the to the right of the column just before (as in "on the steering wheel side") the big U bracket.

Yep, only 2 speeds. I had mine apart this winter for "readjustment", and only 2 sets of contacts (for the 2 different speeds).

And when adjusting the cable position (at the wiper motor cable clamp), make sure you have a little room for over travel of the contacts. They tend to drift with use after a while.

Whenever I turn mine on in my '62 I just turn the **** to get the right speed. Seems more variable to me then just two speeds. The cable pulls a slide and too me makes it operate as a variable speed system

If you have working washers and wipers (at any speed) in a C1 its near miraculous; I laugh every time I think about when I first saw that pulley and cable system under the dash.... I thought it was some Rube Goldberg deal some prior owner cobbled together.

But I did spend a couple weeks dinking around with my washer system before I finally got it going...that was fun...

Every once in a while I wind up in the rain and it cracks me up every time I turn them on. They're a lot different than the new stuff.

Hey they are a big step from the vacuum-operated wipers that slowed down at stop lights!

Oh yes...

I had a '55 Buick with vacuum wipers and the wipers stalled out when you took off too fast from a light. Sooo....you were blinded by the rain just when you needed to see the most... Just grit your teeth and hold her in a straight line till the wipers start back up !!!

I've got a 56 Olds with a dual action fuel pump, in order to drive the vacuum operated wipers. I hope to one day get the car assembled enough to see how bad the wipers really are.
