OT: Popped the Question to the SLF!
Hey Gang!
Well, it's been a week now so I thought I'd spill with the news. I popped the question to the Special Lady Friend last Friday (she said, "Yes, of course!"). I knew she was Special the first time I laid eyes on her, and heard her voice...
We've been together for 4 and a half years now, and the timing seemed right.
We've been through a lot already, 3 moves, 4 real estate transactions and renos (all mine), 3 jobs and a lay-off (also all mine), 5 cars (guilty again), friends and family being ill and dying...
But we've also gone on some spectacular camping trips in BC, and vacations to Las Vegas, San Diego, New York, Belize, Paris, London, and soon to Puerto Vallarta...
Not to mention scores of fabulous times here in Vancouver: dining, music, drinking...
And now we're settled into a fabulous apartment in an great location. We even got a cat!
She and I are a fabulous match, we bring out each other's best, and temper the worst (she's been teaching me to chill-out and enjoy life more directly, instead of always working for the future). She encouraged me to buy my first Corvette (the 64), and supported me when I bought the second (99 daily driver). What can I say? If that aint love?...
We hadn't been planning to get engaged; we're both in our early '40's with no kids, both financially secure with good jobs (for now at least - I'm in high-tech...), and neither of us had any inherent desire to formalize the relationship. Which just made it seem like a better idea...
So, I enlisted her best friend to do some clandestine research into ring styles, made my purchase, and waited for the right moment. Which was last Friday - Spring Equinox, and a beautiful evening. I had a bouquet of her favourite flowers made up, which helped to set the tone (but not too over the top to draw suspiscion), and cheerfully got everything ready for dinner (home made bbq steak pizza) while she finnished off some work. I made the first round of Martinis just as the sun was setting (we have a nice view from the apartment).
I put on one of her favourite songs (Al Green: Let's Stay Together), made the second round of drinks, and then gave her the ring.
It couldn't have worked out better - she was surprized and thrilled, and demanded another Martini - having suddenly emptied the second one. That's my Gal! It was fun letting the story of how she actually picked out the ring, without knowing it, unwind as we savoured the moment.
Later, we took the cat for a walk to go buy cigars to go along with the nightcaps on the roof-deck.
It's all good.

Congrats and best of luck to you both.
My experience was very similar after being single 18 years. It was a no brainer for me. Anyone who has met my wife will agree. Have a long and happy life together.

Congratulations on the engagement! In all honesty, I suspected she was the one for you all along,
because you spoke of her lovingly, so often in your posts. Here's to a lifetime of happiness!

Congrats! I ran out of excuses why we shouldn't get married after about four years also. Goin' to Pto. Vallarta? Do yourself a favor and book one of the dune buggy tours down there. Four speed VW power with opportunities to get a little sideways! Lotsa fun, but very dusty.

Thanks for all the kind words and encouragement! It's a bit of a thing to wrap your head around - we're not in a big hurry to get married, so we figured we'd do the engagement thing for a while first...
As for the behind the wheel time, and the garage mistress - I think the '64 is getting jelous. I'll have to take her out tomorrow and show her a good time.

Try the "Six Flags Tour". We loved it. Congrats on the engagment.
the only "true tequila" comes from the county that PV is located
and they are proud of it (as they should).
