Default 283 Engine Value?

I took a 283 as a partial trade. I was told it has about (500) miles on a complete rebuild.

Here is the info:

Casting Number: 3731548 1957 283ci

Casting Date: I1156

I September
11 11th Day of September
56 1956

Pad Stamping: F415??

F Flint Assembly Plant
4 April
15 15th Day of April

Drivers Head Casting Number: 3731554 1957 283ci

Drivers Head Casting Date: L1156

L December
11 11th Day of December
56 1956

Passenger’s Head Casting Number: 3731554 1957 283ci

Passenger’s Head Casting Date: L1156

L December
11 11th Day of December
56 1956
I want to sell it but I am unsure as to its value. Can anyone out there give me an idea as to its worth?

Thanks

Default looks like

A Tonowanda to me.
Based on the T on the heads and the 56 for a year as opposed to 6 on a Flint block. Also saw a T next to the GM on the block
What is the cast date on the block? if the year is 56 vs 6 it is a T block.

Sorry, I think you wanted this photo. I believe it is:

Forget the stamp pad stamping. It has been surfaced and then someone stamped that F 4 1 5. Totally meaningless now.

The date code you list as I 11 56 means a Tonawanda block. So it is nothing for a Corvette.

A 283 is a nice engine and fun, but not a monster powerhouse. You can use it to bore out to a 301 (302) or use the crank to build a 302 in a 327 block. No many do that anymore.

You might find some '57 Chevy guy looking for a 283 to be dated correctly but not likely.

If you can get $500, be happy.

Definitely a passenger car block. Casting date is Tonawanda with the two date 56, the pad has been grossly altered so the F means nothing and the Flint corvette engines had a front oil galley that they plugged with a square, threaded plug that sat at the 11:00 position towards the top front of the block.

There are many of these out there anywhere from $100 to $300. Take your pick. Sorry, but that's what you have.

Dillon, let me clear one thing up. My $100 to $300 is for the block only. If the engine has had a total rebuild, along with the heads you should be able to do much better than that. I would say for the right customer you could get $500 assuming that it is fully rebuilt. Good luck!

Yeah, the motor has some use/value, but the 56 date cast means Tonawanda, and that pad... wow.

Heads are 2 barrel heads so no value there at all. What is the number on the intake and carb? Might be some value there..

Hang on to it........ Soon they'll only be aftermarket "crate" motors around and you'll have a nostalgic original little mouse motor you can drop into anything and have fun with. Maybe like an old Chevy II for your son (or grandson) which are pretty light cars to begin with........ JMHO
