I never even thought about the old starter when I put my car togeather. I installed the new high torque starter and have never looked back. It kicks the engine over on the hottest days with out a problem.
Forgot to mention................I need one with the same terminals on the solenoid as a stock starter...................4 terminals.
Rex,
I don't know of a mini-starter that includes the terminal for bypassing the ballast resistor. I guess the sellers of these starters assume you are going to use electronic ignition instead of points.
If you need the ballast bypass function for a points ignition, you would need to incorporate a separate relay (triggered off the starting circuit) for this purpose.
Just bought one for a 70 454 Chevelle we have. It seems to work great and so much lighter and easier to fit into place. I found a big variation in pricing. In the end I picked up one with the same bolt pattern and terminals for $120.00. It's a clone of the G.M. (but not Chinese). It seems that the G.M. is not made by G.M. anyway.

Rex, I use Summit's mini on my 502 and it's worked great for over 5 yrs now. Part # is SUM-820323-OS price $195.00. this starter has a staggered mount so you can position the starter away from headers or the block. It does not have the 4 wire hookup.
Good luck.
Russ
the powermaster has the R and S terminals. I just installed one on my 65sb 3wks ago. Works great! www.powermaster.com.
Or just google powermaster starters give them a call their techs are very knowledgable.
Hmmmm ....... my old one has three terminals rather than 4.
However on this re-build it is going to be retired to the shelf. Besides being big and heavy it will not go into place with the headers already in place........ but I can't put the headers on or take them off with the starter in place
At 58 and laying on my back that old starter is to much work. Think I am going to try the one from Summit this time around.
