The trans shop says that the shifter in my '64 is worn out and needs to be replaced. It's the original one. Are they reman'd by anyone? If not what is a good replacement?

Unless you are determined to stay stock, recommend driving a car with a Hurst shifter and see if you like it. night and day. Along the same lines if you haven't switched your C5 Zo6 shifter yet, drive a C6 or better yet C6Z06. Super improvement for less than $200. Very civilized and much more precise.
The Hurst will give you much shorter throws than the stock shifter.
You can also get a stock "look-alike" t-handle that goes on the Hurst so it looks completely like a stock shifter but you get the improved shifting of the Hurst unit,
Here is mine: Hurst shifter with "look-alike" handle so it appears stock
On the other hand, if you want to keep your original stock unit I'b be very surprised if it's so worn that a basic rebuild doesn't bring it back to like new.
Here is an article on rebuilding your shifter - I haven't done it myself but it doesn't look very difficult. http://www.corvettemagazine.com/tech...rticles/c2/56/

Except I would just purchase the Hurst guts, and then buy the fake, original looking bar that bolts to the Hurst linkage. That way,you have the best of both worlds. My orig shifter was shot and I bought a repro from Volunteer Vette's, and I have been happy with it. Its exactly like the original.......shifter rattle and all.
There are several types on the Hurst site. Super Comp etc. Which is the correct application? How would I buy just the guts?

Competition plus is the one I have had for 40 years (on a 66 muncie), works great. Jegs has shifter for $226 and install kit for $126, this would be with Hurst handle and ****. Corvette central appears to have the competition plus shifter + kit + stock appearing handle for $435. For whatever reason, I could not find 63-67 small block shifters in the hurst site. Whoever you buy from, make sure it is a competition plus.
You are probably used to a worn out stock shifter, so even a stock replacement/repair would be an improvement. But once you try out a Hurst, you won't look back..
again on the C5 z06, the stock shifter is a POS, my wife refused to drive it. Once I got the C6z06 shifter, I couldn't keep her away from it. Now that could be good or bad.........
Why not just rebuild your stock shifter? All levers available and you may just need to compress the cage that holds it all together a bit; fairly easy and painless job.

From what I am told the bottom of the shifter itself is worn (out of round and oversized holes I think) and maybe can't be rebuilt?
I am partial to the Hurst Competition Plus shifter. Nice short crisp throws and a solid feel. I replaced my 60',62', and 63' shifters on the BW T10's and never regretted the change.
