Default Jeep box conversion

If I put the Jeep box power steering conversion on my SB with NO options, would I use the double crank pulley #3744043? Dennis

you're going to have to have some way to drive the power steering pump, can't all be driven off the same belt.

I thought I would send you a pic. of my installation. Note the hard lines
I used to make a clean install. When I put my car together I did not want to mess with pulleys, I installed a serpentine belt system.

When I looked at the photo I noticed the lack of shims on the A-arms used to align my car. Sombody else used a stack of them. When I did the frame off we realigned the frame. It really made for a lot less problems when I put the car togeather. Any way I hope the photo helps.

Hey Dennis.
What serpentine conversion did you use?
Thanks

Dennis I use the stock double groove crank pulley and stock power steering pump pulley on all 3 of my cars with the Jeep box. You will really enjoy the Jeep box, and I suggest slotting the upper aframe cross shafts so you can slide them back about 1/4 inch and get 4 to 5 degrees positive caster. It really gives the Jeep box a better feel.

Tom

I used the Vintage Air System. Be aware you'll have to use a reverse water pump and reverse fan. I discussed this with them as to why, and I was told because of the compact area in the Corvette and the location of the belt tensioner.

Thanks Dennis.
Very nice setup but I wasn't looking to do all that. I can't keep my alt/wp belt from slipping under power. I thought a serpentine set up would solve that problem but I'm cheap..errrr....thrifty....and I don't want to drop allot of money on a changeover. In these times there are too many other places I could use the bucks.

OCS1667, thanks for the photos. Your set up is VERY nice. I wish I could go with it, but $$ for the project is limited and not available until next year. I thought I would start researching early for components because the double pulley I mentioned was on E-bay and it made sense to me it would be the one to use when you only add PS. The alternator runs with the water pump pully and then the PS runs off the front of the double pulley. Got some other little projects underway right now with little to no cost. So turning the wheel one more year after 37 years is no big deal. My original question still stands, is 3744043 pulley number the one too be used? Thanks all, Dennis

I forgot something that makes this upgrade a real winner. You don't need that big old steering wheel. I found a 70's corvette wheel whose dimensions were around 15", and had it leather wrapped. It's makes for getting in and out of the car pure pleasure.

I was wondering how the smaller wheel would affect visibility of the gauges?

I haven't had a problem or even thought about the wheel obstructing my vision. I'm a little over 6'. I took the pic. some time ago, it my be a little misleading. I just sat in the car, and I can assure you, I was able to see all the gauges, with no effort at all, nothing was blocked.

Thanks for the info and photo, that wheel looks like it came with the car. I'm a little over 6' as well - that helps.

Another question, did you - or has anyone else - install a collapseable column with the upgrade? Not sure if all the C3's had them, or if the parts are interchangeable. Perhaps if one tore both columns apart they could swap the C3 shaft into the C2 housing?

Would someone show a close-up shot of the Jeep box bolted to the frame? Also, are the Jeep box and the steering shaft on the same center-line or is there an off set angle in either direction (side-to-side or up-and-down)? And lastly, has anyone used the Jeep box that has been modified by welding new mounting ears to match the vette bolt locations? thanks CJ

I looked and found a front and rear view photo.

You can see the 3 bolt heads on the frame located near the brake line that use the same holes that mounted the original one.

They are a little longer because he furnishes a shim made of plate steel to align the new box to the same angle as before. You have to cut off about a 1.5 of the end of the shaft. Every thing else is very easy, and bolts right up.
