Default Fuel Pump

What kind of fuel pumps do you guys run? I have a stock Carter on my 300hp 67. Will a hi performance street pump from Holly, Edelbrock or Carter improve performance? Hurt gas mileage?

Thanks

....fuel is metered into the engine by demand on the carburator so it draws on the reservoir in the fuel bowl...the fuel bowl volume is controlled by the float and carb inlet valve...the high pressure side of your fuel system is just before that inlet valve meaning that the fuel pump needs to have just enough pressure to keep up with the highest demand of the carb - so unless your car is draining the carb bowl dry, a higher pressure fuel pump will give you nada....

...in fact, if you don't have very good o-rings sealing the inlet valve, a high pressure fuel pump will cause fuel blow-by and flood the engine, and in the most servere cases, cause raw fuel to pour out the venturis (and sometimes straight UP the vent stacks), causing the ignition of a bright orange/yellow flame OUTSIDE of your engine.....uh, not good

...unless you need the high pressure, stick with a stock pump rated for your engine

I'm using a standard pressure electric pump near the tank, which prevents vapor lock and allows you to shut off fuel for added security.

magic, i'm with you. i run a holly electric, both for the shut off security, but also so i can crank the engine when i work on various thins, without flooding it. wouldn't go back to a mechanical.

Kid

Great grasp of the basics. For a guy with all that sophisticated hardware like DI and 3x2 you still have not forgotten the basics!!!

What a guy. Virtual Beer to you!

...TheOman....hey, thanks, appreciate it :yesnod: ......unfortunately i only learn this stuff the hard way :cry

......the tim allen approach of "more power" doesn't usually work unless you have a pretty good respect for the basics....btdt

I an using the stock fuel pump on my 65 300/327. I have had no problems with performance, nor, hot and cold starting.

I use electric because I had a new mechanical AC pump installed before a 4000 mile trip and it cracked internally in Montana. I limped to Jackson Hole and paid a fortune to get it replaced. The AC pump before it and the one after it leaked at the gasket and fittings. The mechanical pump is in a ridiculous place, and the line runs next to the lower radiator hose to promote vapor lock. If you are not having trouble, you are VERY luck or drive VERY little.

A standard fuel pump is all you need. My motor is tweaked all around, goes 13.6 ET, pump is OTC replacement from Carter. If it fails you can get on anywhere in the US. enjoy!

....just drive 'em! Dennis, TOY-1
