I have been looking for a 63 coupe for a while. Today I found one for 35K It has an old checked repaint, but is presentable. The interior is in ok condition. Body has had a few repairs nothing too bad, the frame has some rust issues in front of the rear wheel area, lastly the engine and transmission are non original, engine is ok, the original air cleaner and heat shields ect... are not present, trans slips out of gear. Base model no options low HP. the car has a look of a solid usable old car. Does this seem worth the price? Sadly I had no camera with me when I looked at it.

I would agree with Mike M. Even with an original base engine, I doubt that one could get close to $35K. There was a real nice '64 roadster a few months ago (365 matching, good paint) that went for $36K. This car seems a far cry from that. Keep watching the different "for sale" forums, including Ebay, and you will get some perspective on what these cars bring. Don't be in a hurry. In this economy, patience is the watch word.
It all depends on what you want. If that car has the right color combo for your liking, and you enjoy rebuilding things and then KEEPING them, that might be a good buy. If you're buying to flip it, you'll easily be upside down at $35K.
NOM (non origianl motor) and rust being the two biggest. I am thinking low 20's at best.
Rust is at the least a hassle, and at most it is a really big deal.
One problem with old vettes is they can look ok but be really bad underneath. I watched a really nice looking green 69 ragtop fail to get a bid at $7K at the auction in Bllomington a few years back. I was tempted to bid but I had not preinspected it. It failed to get a bid. I went over to look at it afterward, the frame was literally gone from the drivers door back to the kickup. Amazingly, someone had just put fresh paint on it.
You should be able to get a decent frame NOM for mid 20's, and one with an original motor but needing a little work for around 30.
