Default Need Help with Engine Casting Number

I'm looking at an engine block with the casting number of 3858174. This number is located on the back left side of the block. Can anyone tell me if that would be a correct 327 cu in block for a '64 vette. If not what vehicle would be be out of. Thanks

Some Corvettes of that era used the 3858174 block. Make sure it's a Flint casting and not a Tonawanda before you go any further. Is the stamp pad info still intact? Does the date code work for your car?

64 Corvettes left the factory with an engine block casting #3782870 cast @ the Saginaw foundry.

yup, nothing but '870 casting blocks for the 64.

as for the "If not what vehicle would be be out of" question, can you advise what the casting date is for this block, and what, if anything, is found on the stamp pad? THEN the folks here will tell you some super deep info on what vehicle it was originally delivered with

well that rules out a '66 Corvette installation . . . . ('174 blocks were used in 66 Corvettes)

I can't find any listing for HCH, didn't think they used three letter codes that far back anyway (?)

HCH is 66 full size pass car 275 hp 327 with powerglide. The "H" is for Holley carb. The same engine with quadrajet was HCR.

well, there seem to be other '174 blocks out there stamped HCH - and I am willing to bet the OP's engine has a 66 m.y. casting date. Found this on another forum:

Subject: [Chevelle-List] Engine code

I'm looking at a 327 engine to buy. The seller says it's a 327/350. The block code is 3968174 and the heads are 3860462. I can't find these numbers anywhere. The deck is stamped HCH. I can find HC but not HCH. I haven't looked at the motor yet. This is info he gave me over the phone. If it is a 327/350 it will be mine. He's asking $1500 or best. Can anyone one help me with the casting numbers? Mfg date on it is 7/9/1966. Correct for my '66.
Thanks
Rich
