Default VIN marking on frame

I've read somewhere the VIN is either stamped or, stenciled on the frame and that it's on the right side and can be seen when the rocker is removed.

Can somebody confirm this before I remove my side pipe and covers?

Thanks,
Eric

the vin is stamped on the kickup...left side above the wheel...you will need a mirror to see it if the body is still on...

Mine, on the 1957, is stamped on the driver side, near the kick panel. The body had to be lifted a couple inches before I could see it with a mirror; also had to sand the area to get a good look to ID the number.

Stamped a couple of places, as I recall. One is on the top of the kickup as referenced in the above post, another is on top of the frame towards the kickup. Should be along about the rear of the driver's seat, as far as location. They vary a little, the stamper didn't measure the exact spot he was going to stamp the cars.

And, you'll need a mirror at best, along with a little cleaning up on the frame.

It's on the top horizontal surface of the driver's side rear frame rail, either above or just forward of the #4 body mount frame bracket - you'll need to clean it and use a small mirror. There's another one about 12" forward of the kickup on the main side rail, but you can't see that one with the body on.

For my 66, the one on the drivers side rail can be seen with the body on. You must remove the rocker panel. Once removed you can run your fingers on the top the rail around were your walet would sit if you were in the drivers seat. You will feel the impressions left by the stamp. If you lay on the ground and put a small mirror in the space between the top rail and body in the proper angle with a flashlight you will see the numbers. I could not find mine on the kickup.

Are you talking about the stamp or the stencil?

The above answers are where it is stamped on the frame...it is also stenciled on the frame and I think that is on the right(passenger) side

Well, I have run into a road block for the day.

Removed the side pipes and covers on both sides. Started with the right and cleaned and scraped and no sign of the stencil marking.

Moved to the left, and looked all over and cannot locate the vin stamping.

Using John Z's photo, I was not able to locate the stamping. Tomorrow I plan to remove the right rear tire and get closer.

Where is the over stamping located? Could it be under the battery box (my car is a big block) or, is it on the inside rail?

I am in the process of cleaning the frame (yes with the body on) and plan to repaint it and re-stencil the right side.

Look right above the mounting point for the suspension bumper at the top of the left rear kickup as mentioned.

It's difficult to see even with a mirror.

The other location you won't see with the body on. It's right near where your left hip would be sitting in the seat.

You didn't mention the year of your car but the other posters seem to think you have a C2. As JohnZ stated, serial numbers are on the drivers side.

Numbers not visible thanks to thick powder coating, but location is here:

Found it, 5S113934. Faint but I could make out enough to be satisfied..and some of the key elements for a big block car check out.

What I did learn after reading Noland's book, is the body is a A.O. Smith with body number A-2457 with a date of H23 (March 23) and last serial number for March was 113936.

Not that any of this matters, just intresting to learn.

Thanks again to all who responded with guidence.
