I purchased new bushings for my distributor. The lower bushing was already removed, but the top bushing is still installed.
How do i remove the top bushing and what is the best method for installing the new bushings? I purchased one of the bushing installation tools, but i am not sure how to use it-no instructions.
Thanks
I finally found a flashlight last night and discovered that the distributor housing is machined for the bushings. For some reason i thought that i was going to need to drive them into a certain depth and then stop, but that's clearly not the case. Its pretty straight forward-just remove old bushings/bearings and drive the new ones in.
However, the shaft does feel a little tight when installed all the way. Im not sure how freely it should rotate-???
I've never done it. But I've read that the bushings are driven out. Sometimes with a slide hammer. Sometimes with a cut off distributor shaft.
The Paragon catalog and other reading I've done, say that the size of these bushings varies, and that they may need machining before and after installation. Sometimes they're too thick or thin to properly go in the housing. Sometimes the hole is too narrow or wide for the shaft. You might want to measure everything before you install them.
The way I do it is to pre-fit the bushings to the shaft before pushing them inside using an arbor press. Once inside, if the shaft is too tight I use a brake cylinder hone to open the bushings. If you are really lucky you might find someone who has the correct reamer.
