Can you take the back off of an alternator and rotate it 180 Degrees? I have never had one apart. I just got one from GM performance and the chrome plating on the top of the back half of the case is horrible. If I could take out the 4 bolts and rotate just the back case it would look ok. Otherwise I will just return it o Summit.
...and be careful if you pull to far out, the brushes will come out. Just use a paperclip and install them back in the holder again is all if it does happen.
I just rebuilt mine (1963) and unfortunately had it apart too long to remember the correct orientation. (I know, I know, I should have taken a picture...)
I placed the connector at the top (180 out from the pivot point), but it just doesn't look right. Does anyone have a picture of the correct orientation?
Yes you can take the back off but you will probably lose the brushes. A better way is to remove the pulley and separate the front case by pulling up on the front case and holding the armature down in the rear case... Then rotating to the desired clocking... But for one who has never taken one apart if the brushes pop out of the brush holder You will have to take it apart and replace the brushes into the holder held in by a toothpick which is then removable through the rear case...A motors manual would give a picture description of what i`m describing.
You know what, return it as they will not be too happy with a customer that hakes there alternator apart.. Warranties would be off...
It can be done with out worrying about the brushes but most of the time if you just pull the 4 bolts and try to rotate it one of the brushes will pop out. I would just separate the case and use an allen wrench to hold the brushes back when you put the case where you want. Then when you put the case halves back together pull the allen wrench out and the brushes will be seated correctly.
I had once done a write up about clocking an alternator for a Midyear but it has been lost in the archives I fear....
