My '58 is ready to have the rebuilt 283 engine installed, and I'm looking for someone to do it. I'm in the Orange/Tustin/Santa Ana area of Orange County in Southern California. Can anyone give me a reliable recommendation? Also, a recommendation for transport of the vehicle to the shop? Thanks!
Any reason you wouldn't tackle the job yourself? In and out with these cars is pretty straight forward. Did my '55 motor by myself in an afternoon. Cherry picker is the only tool you'll need not in your tool chest, maybe hose clamp pliers if you use the old Corbin style hose clamps... Save you bucks at $60 - $80 and hour shop time...
At 79 years old, I'm not in any condition to drop an engine in the car by myself. It isn't that I don't know how to, it is that I just don't have the strength to do it anymore and don't want to risk hurting myself, the car or engine componets. My friends aren't much healthier than me either....
Thanks for replying though. I did find someone in the Solid Axle club who is willing to help. Corvette friends are the best.

Stan:
If you run into any trouble let me know. I have a hobby shop near Orangewood and Eckhoff in Orange where I keep my C1's and would be available to help.

I am 49 and just did my motor still took a week for pain to leave body , .enjoy the 58 when it is completed !
When I'm 79 a picture of the car will be sufficient. Certainly no fun driving 50s technology ( no power steering, brakes, rough riding suspension ) when the new SLR Cadillac is parked in the next stall.
Hire the neighbor's son for lubrication , seal, mileage maint. The best coffee table in town !
The harbinger of wisdom is the recognition of the reality that age inhibits bodily agility and strength. I suffer from a lack of it myself at times. You are a wise man Stan. I have owned my Corvette for forever it seems and my mind remembers how easy it was to do things like pulling the engine, or changing the windshield. Although I can still do them it is markedly more difficult and I have to force myself to concentrate and double check myself to make sure everything is in place and safe. I usually work alone so if anything happens I would likely not get help right away. Evenso I find myself taking risks I probably shouldn't, especially when riding dirt bikes with my young (29) son and his buddies.
Best wishes with your project Stan and enjoy driving that beauty when you get it back together.
