Infrared Thermometer
I know you get what you pay for, but I need to break down and get an IR gun. On ebay the price range is all over the place. Are the cheap ones okay? ($40-$50 range).
I just ordered one 29.95 plus 5.00 shipping.
I talked to one of the reps, and he told me that this would do everything I would need, although it was a low end unit. I should have mine by the end of the week.
I live in the bay area, (Vacaville Ca.) anyone in the area that needs to use it feel free to contact me
Works great...checked against expensive one and only was 1° difference. Low use tool -- cheap & works
Harbor Freight is just a few miles away so low use and/or throw away tools make good $$$ & sense but some just need the $100 tool that they will use 1-2 times instead of the $30 that does the same job.

Reason: Spelling
I may have payed a little more but the instant gratification was worrth it plus beware of shipping and handling charges, I have only gotten junk from harbor freight

That's why their name is Harbor Freight. They get whatever is left over at the harbor from the ships that came from China!
I spent many years in an industry that heavily used IR units. My department had a dozen different units - from $40 units to a $500 unit that I used to check the other units.
For what it's worth, the most that any price units varied was +/- 5 F*.
What IS important is to realise that ALL IR units are sensitive to the surface that they are aimed at - they will read up to 30* diff. on a shiny VS dull black surface (unless you pay big bucks for a unit with adjustable Emmisivity).
+/- 5 degrees is plenty good for car work - just shoot a dull black surface for accuracy.
Also, for what it's worth, we just screw a Jegs or Summit thermometer right in our intakes. We know exactly how hot we are at a glance.
