Try playing with the reset cable a little before you pull the cluster. Sometimes the gears can get out of place. Your reset should spring back to position. That's what holds the drive in place for the odometer. Not confident this will work, but it costs nothing and only takes a few minuets.
I also have an old Corvette Fever Magazine article on how to do it that I will scan for you if you would like it. Gotta find it first tho............it was awhile back.

The odometer / tripmeter gears could be worn so that they don´t have any contact. This caused my odometer to stop at 84.000 miles. Local shop fixed the gears and the meters are working just fine again.
