If you look 1/2 way down the following page:

http://corvette-world.com/corvette_1...tion_codes.php you will see the engine designation codes for '62. This two-letter suffix occurs at the end of the FXXX series and there is no engine suffix of just 'R' in '62...so...unless you missed another letter after the 'R' its looking like this isn't an original engine.

The 62 engine suffix codes indicate that the R was only used for passenger cars. 250 HP, manual trans.

The Corvette codes with an "R" would be RC, RD, RE, RF.

Is the casting and assembly dates to close to a 9949 car. I believe there is a letter after the "R".
thanks

Is the cars VIN stamped on the pad? If not, it's not the original motor.

I don't think he's asking if it's original, I think he's asking if it's date appropriate for the VIN.

According to the Birthday Calculator available here http://www.c1registry.com/

Your car was likely assembled on April 18, 1962.

Given that, a casting date of April 13, and an assembly date of April 17, would just barely make it into the real of possible engines.

Default april 18th

b'day calculator estimates 9949 built on 4.18, close on the stamped date but sounds good.

Oops, my mistake. Assembled in Flint, Michigan on 4-17 and installed in St. Louis Mo. on 4-18. Possible but unlikely. The NCRS judging guide states that 10 days to 8 weeks is normal .

OP first asked if the engine numbers "made sense"...an initial reaction is to think he was interested in originality.. Like 99% of the other posters that ask such questions...

I don't even think it's possible. If you're looking for a block that "could" have been it the car.....That ain't it!!!

Engines were shipped by rail, and took 2-3 days dock-to-dock to get to St. Louis from Flint; overnight expedited truck shipment would get it there in one day, but that was rare. Highly unlikely that a 4-17 engine would end up in a 4-18 car.

Nice thing about an R engine is that sometimes there is room enough to stamp a suffix after the R. The engine is a Flint Engine I believe. But it appears it s a tad late for your car anyhow. Hit it with an F(RF) and order nice restored 62 fuel injection from old JD or Jerry. JD

How much would it cost my buddy to put fuel injection in his '57 Bel Air?
