Default 56 vin question

We own a 56 vette with the vin E56S003487. How is the last 4 of the vin higher than the production number of 3460? Just curious. Thanks.

The first vin # was 1001, so the last was 4467 out of 3467 made, according to the black book. They did that since '53 I think. The 1st one made ended in 1001.

Up through 56, the numbering began with 1001 for the first car. In 57, it changed to 10,001 for the first car.
