Default Hood release cable replacement

I will admit I haven't gotten my sorry azz under the dash to see how the cable is attached to the handle. I was wondering if anyone that has replaced theirs could give me some info on what I'll have to do?

I believe the handle was originally pressed-on the cable, no set screw or not threaded on. The cable attaches under the hood, to the female hood latch with a barrel nut. A replacement press-on handle is available for about $25.00 but I think that it will only work on original 63-66 hood release cables, not on repro ones. A complete, new handle and cable assembly is available for around $55.00 and includes the bracket.

I guess as long as I can't just buy a replacement cable and install it, I might as well try to fix what I have first.

I think I will cut the cable off and try to drill it out of the handle. Then I can drill and tap for a set screw to hold the new cable to the handle.

On my '61 the cable is pressed into the handle but that crimp let go before I got the car. The prev owner put a small screw-type hose clamp on the cable-to-handle connection and that's been working but awfully ugly. Corvette Central just starting selling repro handle/cable hood latch ***'ys for about $105 and I guess that's what I'll wind up doing.

The '63-'67 handle was pressed or swaged onto the shaft, lots of folks have reinstalled them with JB Weld, epoxy, set screws, and similar methods with success.

I reinstalled mine as was originally done, removed the handle and shaft from the housing and re-swaged it to the shaft. ("Re-swaged" for lack of a better term.) Been working fine for several years now, they just work loose over time with the tugging and pulling to open the hood.
