Hi everyone, I'm new to the C2 side of the forum as I usually hang out on the C5 section. Tomorrow I trailer to Las Vegas to pick up my newest acquisition, a 1965 coupe with the 300 hp engine, powerglide, ps, pb and original knockoff wheels. It just finished a complete cosmetic make over and with the powerglide and power steering and brakes it will make a nice car for my wife. My question is --- how can I tell if it is a positraction car?
The easiest way is to light up the rear tires and see how many stripes they leave. But with 300 horses and a powerglide, that's not likely to happen. Unless you do it on a dirt road....gently of course.
The other way is to jack up the rear end, both tires off the ground. With the car in neutral, turn one tire by hand. If the other tire turns the same direction, it has posi.
Steve, two ways to find out if it has posi come to mind. One is to look in towards the fill plug on the passenger side of the differential.
If you see this red plastic marker held in place by the fill plug, it's 'probably' a posi diff.
The second way is to get the car up in the air and crawl under the differential and read the stamped codes on the bottom of the diff.
After you have the numbers/letters, post them and someone will translate the gear ratio and whether it's a posi unit or not.

The third way is to pick up the jack storage cover board and see if it has a Positraction warning sticker on the bottom along with the jacking instructions.

So if the wheels on my car usually spin in the same direction, it means posi. I have noticed lately that it sometimes spins like a non posi (wheels spin opposite). Does that mean a re-build is soon needed?
Verify this, because I'm not absolutely sure. With posi, the wheels will turn in the same direction if the trans is in neutral and the driveshaft is free to turn. The wheels will turn in opposite directions if the trans is in gear and the driveshaft can't turn.
