I’ve had this 383 sitting for 20 years and had minimal info on its history when I got it and have forgotten what I knew then. I’m trying to assess what I might need before I haul it off to the machine shop. Do these rods look like they’ve been balanced? They don’t look like a matched set. Does anyone recognize them? Factory vs Aftermarket?

Well, if you ask me the rods look stock, nothing special and the one rod is very odd with that big knot on it. One of the first things to go when you balance is the sharp tang at the parting line of the rod, all yours are unmolested. I would think about investing in a decent set of rods, ones the supplier will try to keep the weight difference between the rods to 2 grams if your lucky. Stock rods are all over the place on length and weight.

Better yet offset grind the crank, go down to SJ rods, wait wait, to much money!

Rods look unbalanced but they DO have aftermarket rod bolts. You can see the dimple mark for a stretch gauge on the ends.
