Just went for a short cruise and on the way home my car
started to sputter. It never died, but if I didn't pump the
gas it would have. It was like it wasn't getting fuel. When
I stomped on the gas it would come back to life. Then a mile
from home it was back to normal. So my question is do you
think it's the pump or could it have been something else ?

I had a fuel pump that worked fine on level ground but when going uphill exhibited the same symptoms that you are experiencing. Replaced the pump and never looked back.
May have also been a bit of crap in your float bowl that became dislodged when you floored it or one of your floats may have temporarily gotten stuck.......

I will check the filter, but couldn't understand how it cured itself.
I thought something may have been stuck in the carb. I probably
should change the gas tank being that it is original. Thanks for
your responses.
Thanks Rick, I guess I should have asked will the pump
die all at once or a little at a time?

I just replaced my pump after it failed progressively. First, the car was difficult to start after sitting for awhile. I thought this was normal evaporation of the gas in the bowls. Next, the car would periodically sputter at constant throttle and then recover in a few seconds. I thought it was an electrical problem that I needed to look at. Then, it developed a tapping noise that I located to the front passenger side of the engine. I thought this was a pulley problem that I put off addressing until I had time. Finally, the car quit in a parking lot and had to be towed. There was no fuel and I recognized this as probably the fuel pump. When I took it off, the pivot pin on the arm was backed out such that the arm was free and the spring was broken (causing the tap). Rebuilt/replaced and it is running like a champ.
