well you'll find a lot of import stands all over for about $50-$75. I have one of those in a 3 leg and one in a 4 leg. I never use either one. They are too short, the heads lock with pins that are sloppy and I just don't trust them. I have a 30 year 3 leg stand I bought at a speed shop that I use all the time. I never put a BB on it but a SB long block is fine. I use it to mount differentials on and it's at a perfect height for me(6'3"). The head has a bolt to lock it in any position. I inserted a solid steel rod in the head pipe and welded it solid. Works great. The one I would like to see is the type with a gear motor head and crank, looks pretty nice but I don't know anyone who has one.
Last year I purchased a new 2000 lb. engine stand from Summit to hold a completed BBC. You can review them on their website. Happy with the quality/cost factor.
Thanks for the info guys. I wanted to pull the 427 tomorrow so I went to borrow one from a buddy that supposedly held a 502 just fine for him. I wouldn't put my lawn mower engine on that thing. Whatever happened to the good old Lakewood stands from the seventies?
John , I like your stands the best ,think Napa can order me one?.

I bought one from Northern that is a four leg design and will fold up when not in use. It's built a few motors in the last few years with no problems. I think it was about 60 bucks..
I bought a 1500 lb stand from Summit off of Ebay to hold a complete 283. Total was $90 including shipping. It's not a "professional" model but neither am I. Works well for my purposes.
You can get away with a cheap stand if you have access to a welder and a little metal. DO NOT buy a three leg stand. If you move it diagonally toward the corner where there is no wheel, it will tip over. A friend dumped my 383 this way. That stand is unused in the corner now.
