Default Need Big Block Engine Pics

Quite a while back I posted about what engine to drop into my 65 Convertible. I've been gathering parts while working on other projects for a couple months as well as other diversions. I have a Crate LT-1 I could make look like a 365, I was going to do another LS conversion, or I also have a 67 396 passenger car motor.

I've decided to go with the BB and maybe drop an Edelbrock Aluminum top-end kit on it. It's going to be a driver with Power Windows, Power Steering, Power Brakes, and Air. It will be far from Correct. Just a fun car to drive and enjoy. I have a Borg-Warner T-10 from an 80 Z/28 but might drop a 5-speed in it for cruising.

I've done a couple mid-year small-blocks but first BB engine compartment so wanted to get some perspectives on things as well as steal some ideas. Engine compartment need not be stock. Mild to wild is fine.

Thanks!

Joe..

Default B/b install in 65

The most important thing is to check if your front frame crossmember has the depression for the B/B harmonic balancer. If I remember correctly, you car had to be assembled February 65 or later. If I'm wrong, someone please correct me.

That's a good point. I believe February or March. Forgot about that. It's an early Vin car so I may be back to the LT-1 clone setup which actually would be a lot cheaper route for me.

But, did the chassis change or did they just not drop a 396 into them until February/March timeframe? Will have to go dust off m Complete Resto book unless someone has a quicker answer/confirmation.

Thanks

78, take a quick look at the front crossmember of the frame and see if there is a big dimple in it for the BB harmonic balancer. If so, it will work with the 396.

It would be great to build it up like a 396.

Yea, I was being Sunday lounge chair lazy. I got up off my butt and went down to the garage and took a few shots. Looks like I am good to GO@!@!

Next question is - is the Relay rod and Pitman arm for Power Steering setup different between SB and BB? I know the pump brackets are but won't be using the stock pump and setup anyway. But have a relay rod and pitman arm for a P/S setup that I'd like to use.

I also already have the Power Windo conversion Kit, BB Hood, and lots of other goodies getting ready to go. Body has already been off but currently held on by 2 bolts. popping it back off and redoing the chassis and suspension. Frame and birdcage mint.

This is the car I bought from Jeff / 1CoolC2 back in February. Just getting around to it now.

Awesome though.

78, looks like you're ready for a BB. I'd go with that, and try to make it appear like a 65 396 car.

Here's some more motivation for ya.

There was a beautiful 65 coupe at Columbus show couple of years ago, that, at first glance, looked as if had been restored to NCRS specs all the way. After a chat with the owner/builder it turned out it had all aluminum 572ci motor (All orange painted), EFI, 5-speed TKO600. It all looked as it was stock. Even the wheels were 18" knock offs with gold line tires. Very cool car.

78, by the way, great foundation you have there for this project. I wished I had been in a position to do something on that car when Jeff had it, but I am knee deep still with other projects. So cool that you got it and can't wait to see what you end up doing on it.

All great stuff and good inspiration, thanks to all.

Harps, that's pretty much the ticket. Nice BB with an Aluminum top end. That tripower setup rocks. I was also looking at the Edelbrock Pro Flow XT EFI fuelie unit to be different. Seems a little pricey for the power gains though. Although the black unit would look cool under the hood.

I'm going to be using an aluminum radiator with dual electric fans from a SB setup with an overflow tank and battery on the passenger side. Any reason it won't fit? Should cool enough. If not I'll have to do some parts swapping but already have these so am going to give it a try.

I already have a set of BB exhaust manifolds. Picked up a nice pair cheap so am going to use them instead of headers for now and also have a new undercar exhaust. (I've got side pipes on the 81 and going quieter this time).

I'm going to drive it as a rat-rod until I figure out what I want to do for paint. It was originally teal green but I'm going a different route.

Thanks again to all.

Power steering linkage is the same between SB and BB; only the pump and mounting brackets are different.
